JANUARY 2016
JANUARY IS DESIGNATED VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

Vocational Service is not frequently spoken of today in our Rotary Clubs, however, we all know that this avenue of service dates back to 1905 when our founder Paul Harris gathered together gentlemen from various professions who all shared a common sense of fairness coupled with ethical behavior in dealing with others.

Our "Object of Rotary's" second statement is "High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society."

Likewise, our Rotarian "Code of Conduct" includes references to "act with integrity and high ethical standards…deal fairly with others…use professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people."

We all have the opportunity to mentor students who experience Rotary programs such as RYLA, Youth Exchange, Interact, Rotaract, and Peaceful Schools.  Many of our Clubs are seeking young professional members, some are joining Club Satellite groups. These young people many times are seeking mentoring, and we Rotarians have the opportunity to share our professional lives (many times through Vocational talks), promote the Four-Way Test, and what Rotarians throughout the world are doing to promote fairness, truth and goodwill.

EVERYONE LIKES TO FEEL WELCOME

While preparing for the final membership symposium of 2015 I reached out to 15 clubs in the northern part of our District to encourage registration. One unexpected and very welcome email arrived as a response to my “plea” for attending the symposium.  Rotarian and Club Membership Chair, Dietra Porter, of the Longmont Twin Peaks Rotary Club shared wonderful and inspiring insights about what’s working for them.  I am excited to share her email with all of you as I hope that it will affirm what you are doing at your club and on what ideas you could borrow to energize and grow your club.

“Good afternoon, I wanted to send a quick note regarding our club activities that I feel increases membership… I have only been a member of Rotary for the past 9 months or so. Being one of the youngest members of the group at 35, I’ll tell you what drew me to this particular club, because frankly I had envisioned Rotary to be an elderly “good ol’ boys” club.

ZIMBABWE GLOBAL GRANT REPORT

Community Empowerment
Mufakose Area of Harare, Zimbabwe

The Rotary 3H Grant, Community Empowerment in Zimbabwe, came to a close in June 2013 after four years of business and computer training.  Through this Health, Hunger and Humanity Grant, more than 5,000 people from the high-density suburbs around Harare were trained, creating over 200 Self Help Groups (SHGs) and 24 computer-oriented Youth Corners.  The most significant impact of the training was an attitude change in the participants, a sense of confidence and competence that transformed themselves and their communities.

But the participants asked for more — additional training at a higher level, more computer training and dedicated computers for the women.  Their recommendations were the basis for the Global Grant for Advanced Training in Business and Computer Skills that began in 2014, which continued the partnership of the Rotary Clubs of Highlands in Zimbabwe and Denver Mile High.  This new Grant ended with a rousing celebration in Harare in October 2015, where many of the participants received their graduation certificates.

Many Clubs in District 5450 have supported our work in the Harare area for years.  Without that support we could not have reached our goal of having a sustainable impact in these communities.

CRUTCHES 4 AFRICA UPDATE

Delayed Container Arrives in Nakuru Kenya

Way back at the end of July about 35 Rotarians and friends of Crutches 4 Africa (the international project of Mountain Foothills RC) helped to load a 40’ container with some 2,500 pieces of mobility devices (mds) that were shipped out to Nakuru Kenya.
The container arrived on the 8th of October and entered into two and a half months of chaos!  MSC, the shipping company, for some reason not known to us or our shipper, DHL, rerouted our container to clearing agents that are in direct competition to DHL.  After hundreds of emails and a great deal of leg work from one of Crutches 4 Africa’s board members that is Kenyan, the container was finally released on December 16th!  Transported to Nakuru, Kenya, the container is now waiting for distribution.

Several plans were made for distribution and with each delay in clearing customs, new plans were made.  At last, plans are now in place for a distribution trip for David and his wife Candice that will commence the day after the Presidents dinner.  We plan to be back in time for the Cabin Fever Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on February 6th and to report the good news of successful distribution.

To all who helped collect and load, thank you!  We hope to update on the distribution in the February 5450 newsletter.  Happy New Year!  Rtn. David Talbot, Mountain Foothills Rotary Club, founder, www.crutches4africa.org

FOR THOSE TRAVELING TO SEOUL

This article was forwarded by Jim McGibney, for those attending the RI Convention in Seoul and wanting more information about South Korea.

With its Alps-like peaks shrouded in layers of sunlight and fog, Korea has long been called the "land of the morning calm." Serene landscapes of the Orient notwithstanding, you have to get up pretty early these days to see any sort of a.m. tranquility along the booming boulevards of Seoul.

Commerce crisscrosses the Korean countryside like supercharged neon fiber-optic circuits in the world's most Internet-wired, smartphone-enabled country. Yes, the present-day landscape of the 5,000-year-old Asian peninsula-nation seems a world away from a horizon that 60 years ago was strewn with postwar refugee camps from the East China Sea to the eastern shore.

RI CONVENTION IN SEOUL KOREA

In 2016, Rotary International will be holding the International Convention in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK). The current projection is the meeting might exceed the current record attendance, which was in Osaka, Japan in 2004 and was 43,381. We are hoping to top 45,000 this coming year.

Rotarian Jim McGibney, Club 31, was appointed in 2011 to the position of Honorary Consul to the Republic of Korea in Colorado, and has worked to promote the relationship between Colorado and the ROK. The focus has been on Visa's, Driver license exchange, visiting Executives and much more.

For those that are interested in Seoul and Korea, Jim has developed a 30 minute program that he presented to the Rotary Club of Fort Collins and to the Denver Rotary Club. He is scheduled to give that program in Steamboat Springs in November.

If you have an interest or any questions on the program, please feel free to contact jim at jmcgibney@earthlink.net or by phone at 303-888-3689.  You can also watch a great (short) You Tube video for the convention at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbeRjRF-x0E.
