March 6 through 20 2014, more than a dozen Dist. 5950 Rotarians, spouses and friends journeyed halfway around the world to Nepal and Bhutan on a goodwill and service trip. During our trip, we met with two Rotary clubs and considered future collaborations. We also had a chance to sightsee, including a climb up to “Tigers Nest,” a monastery on a 2,000-foot cliff.

The trip included a service project in Nepal, in partnership with Children and Youth First, a program that supports 53 children in a boarding school in Nepal, most of them from abusive families. We bought supplies for the school, helped children whitewash a classroom and learned how to make momos (steamed dumplings), which we shared for lunch.

In Bhutan, we worked with the newly-formed Rotary Club of Thimphu to clean the town’s Main Street. The event, which brought together over 50 volunteers, garnered television coverage, which gave club members a chance to spread their message of keeping Bhutan clean of plastics. Afterward, local Rotarians received a call from the Prime Minister and we several members of our group had a chance meeting with the Queen of Bhutan, both thanking us for cleaning their street.

For information about future international trips being planned in our district,  contact Sam Dalal at bombayflyr@aol.com.
