The Apple Valley Rotary Club hosted its first fundraiser pickleball tournament at Johnny Cake Ridge West Park, Saturday, Aug. 12. Fifty-three teams and more than 100 players participated in the event which raised more than $8,000, according to Rotary member Pat Selchow. Apple Valley Rotary President Bill Butler said players came from all over the Twin Cities metro and western Wisconsin to compete and the club was excited about the turnout for the first year. Proceeds will support local, regional and international Rotary projects including 360 Communities, The Open Door, scholarships for Apple Valley and Eastview High students and more. Butler added the club decided to try a pickleball tournament because it was difficult to continue the traditional car raffle fundraiser with the cost of vehicles. “Our goal is to have the largest pickleball tournament in the south metro,” Butler said. “(We) really hope that the ... foundation we laid this year allows us to continue this tournament and grow it for next year.”
