Guy Johnson the District 5950 Assistant Governor Coordinator share a little more about himself and his Rotary journey. Guy is wearing many hats literally and figuratively! Read his story in his words.I’m actually the Assistant Governor Coordinator – not an AG; But I was previously AG for the Minneapolis area clubs. I became an AG because I was asked! However, I soon learned it was very fun to learn more about my clubs and get together with their leaders on a regular basis.
The Minneapolis area clubs are all amazing. They offer many choices within a relatively small geographic area including club size, meeting time, meeting place, club culture/diversity, areas of community focus and much more. There is truly something for everyone!
I joined primarily for the community. We had returned to the Twin Cities after a 17 year absence and I was looking for ways to reengage the community. This process can be difficult in the Twin Cities where so many people still have their high school friends. My spouse was a Rotarian and joined my current club. After visiting several times, I did too. I immediately had 25 new friends who cared about me. I stay in Rotary for the community, but also to help make the world a better place through numerous volunteer opportunities and supporting a variety of tremendous local and international organizations.
I love our Happy Hours (we call them “Rotarians on the Loose”). We often combine them with a bike ride, a volunteer opportunity or some other activity, but I also enjoy volunteering at the food shelf we support and Ella Baker school.
Fun things I like to do include riding my bike (weather permitting), swimming (when the weather is NOT permitting), reading, watching pro-football and playing the piano (badly). I still have a day job as a nutrition consultant to food companies, commodity groups or anyone else looking for a nutrition-related solution.
My advice for other Rotarians is “Go for it!”
