Trevor J. Atkin, Governor of District 7820 (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and St. Pierre et Michelon) 1998-1999 died suddenly on February 27, 2014. As a long-time community leader and hydro manager, Trevor saw opportunities to change his local community but wanted to see action to improve water and sanitation as well as literacy around the world.

Trevor parlayed his love of Rotary as a Charter member of the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast in 1989 and served as their first Club Secretary.  He became President 1992-93. Among other successes, Trevor became their first Paul Harris Fellow and followed that with 3 more and was recognized posthumously with a fifth PHF on April 11 at his Club’s 25th Anniversary Charter Night.  He was chair of the organizing committee for the 25th anniversary at the time of his passing.  He is an honourary member of the Rotary Club of Stutton in Ashfield, Notthinghamshire.

Among his many accomplishment through Rotary, Trevor founded the St. John’s Region’s Probus Club, lead a District Christmas Card project that raised a significant contribution to PolioPlus, served as District Secretary, Group Study Exchange Chair, Treasurer and Organizer for the 1996 Zone Conference in St John’s, and received TRF District Service Award two years in a row.

He was exceptionally humbled and proud to lead the GSE team to the Philippines in 1995.  As a result of that visit, clubs in our area worked together on a water project that created clean water for an orphanage.

It is also important to note that as an involved and active member of the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast, that club received three Significant Achievement Awards for projects at Topsail Beach, Rotary Paradise Youth Centre and the Manual River Interpretation Centre.  Only 42 Rotary Clubs worldwide have accomplished this feat.

Trevor was quietly active in all aspects of Rotary by living, breathing and exemplifying Service Above Self.  He will be missed for his continuous support of the fellowship that is such a hallmark of his club as well as his many contributions to their programs and activities.

Trevor loved to travel and see new things and always enjoyed his wee dram of scotch and would never turn away a good dessert.

Trevor is survived by his Rotarian wife, Kathryn as well as family in England and his many friends around the Rotary world.
