Governor Bob Spaulding started right from the start of his year to use the theme of the International President from Sweden, Ernst Breitholtz. The theme was "Good Will Begins with You" and Governor Bob in his opening comments in his directory charged each District Rotarian with their responsibility as Rotarians to apply "good will" in everything they did, at their businesses, at home, as their place of worship, and in their communities.

Governor Bob even arranged for a special trip to New Paulz, New York for members of the District to hear Rotary International President Breitholz further emphasis his theme of spreading "Good Will".

Governor Bob was a man of great determination and· strong beliefs and his persistence became evident to all of the District members in the arrangements that he had to make to relocate in a very short period of time his planned District Conference from Hollywood Florida to the LaChateau Hotel in the Poconos, due to circumstances that occurred late in the planning stage. The Conference ended up as a great Conference with an attendance of over 400 Rotarians and guests.

Governor Bob had as his key staff members the return of Carmine Torsiello as his Secretary and Ed Gehringer as his Chief of staff, and Bob Hardie Jr. as his Treasurer.

Activities of the year included a District picnic at the Paramus Boy's Club, the annual Football game at West Point, the New York Vocational Assembly at the Waldorf Astoria, the Interclub Fellowship Club sponsored by the Fair Lawn Club at Paramus, and the President's Ball held at the Landmark in East Rutherford.

The International Convention was held at Houston, Texas.

In addition to supporting the Rotary Foundation and the Walter Head Foundation and the youth activities of the District, Governor Bob conducted the second half of the Group Exchange with the District in Australia, and also had the District participate in a Nine District Rotary Area Special Assembly.

Governor Bob's persistence in having District members play an active role in their clubs and on a District level during his year in office became a watchword of the District, and Rotary was well served. Governor Bob's first lady, Peg, who became a Rotarian after Governor Bob passed lives in Annapolis, Maryland She added to our reflections of this year by expressing Bob's great concern that Rotary continue to serve future generations. Governor Bob addressed this concern in his selection of six members who later served as Governors of our District, namely Purpuse, Torsiello, Wells, Epple, Benowitz and Hartman.
