RLI Great Lakes holds first training session in Ontario
Our first training session in Ontario was a real success. 18 Rotarians participated in Part I training, four attended the Part II training, and four completed their RLI training by attending Part III. Shown below, from left to right, are Paul Mayrand andDGN Henry Dotson, both from District 6380;Karen Noreen all the way from District 6290;and Jay Eastman from District 6380.

One of the highlights of the session was a visit from several soldiers from the War of 1812. They gave the Americans a bit of a start, I'm sure. Accompanying them is Greg Kett of the Rotary Club of Chatham Sunrise.

Next session: March 1 in Shipshewana, IN
The next RLI Great Lakes Division training session will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2013 at the Blue Gate Garden Inn, Shipshewana, IN. The cost is $75.00 and includes full breakfast, lunch, and all training materials. Breakfast is at 8:00 a.m., class starts promptly at 9:00 a.m., lunch is at noon, and class adjourns promptly at 4:00 p.m. To register for Part I, Part II, or Part III, go to http://rligreatlakes.org/schedule.aspx.

Creating a strong club
One of the goals of RLI is to helpyou create a strong club. The latest issue of the e-mail newsletterRotary Leadersuggests that one way to do this is to treat your members as customers. Treat all of your members like customers, the article explains, and "they will want to attend meetings, volunteer for projects, and become fully engaged, long-term Rotarians.

The article notes four membership mistakes that clubs commonly make:

  • Focusing on recruitment, while neglecting engagement.
  • Forcing new members to adapt to the club and not adapting to new members.
  • Failing to understand the needs of new members.
  • Blaming new members for dropping out rather than evaluating what the new members need.
You can sign up for the Rotary Leader newsletter online. Also, take a look at some of the other newsletters available. You're bound to find one or two other newsletters that will be of interest to you.
