By Kenny Harris, DGE - Service to their community is what Rotarians undoubtedly remember when they look back to the first six months of the 2011-12 Rotary year.

Every Rotary Club in our district had some sort of impact in their community.  On December 3, 2011, each club was invited to brag to other Rotarians about the good deeds they had completed.  Rotarians are usually reluctant to talk about the good they do, but this was an opportunity to share their good works with their peers in our District.

At each corner of our large district, improvements were being made.  Landscapes were being cleaned and freshened.  Schools were being painted.   Money was being raised to benefit local community projects.  Eyesores were getting much needed facelifts.  Forgotten monuments were being re-discovered.  Streams were being cleaned.  Senior citizens were spared the expense of hiring routine maintenance work.  Our Rotary Youth Camp received some extra love.  God bless Rotarians!

The benefits of this “hands-on” type of Rotary service are more than the simple beautification of our communities.  This type of Rotary service builds membership.  This type of Rotary service builds memories.  This type of Rotary service turns members of Rotary into Rotarians.

For the next project you do, invite your neighbor to come along.  Give them something to remember.  Give them the opportunity to become Rotarians.

It’s great to be a Rotarian.

Thank you, Ted Meyer, for inviting me to Rotary, 28 years ago.
