The victim of a sudden cardiac arrest has a 50-75% chance of being resuscitated if a shock is administered to the heart within 5 minutes of collapsing.  Do you know how to administer CPR or AED??

The Texas Arrhythmia Institute, a non-profit foundation dedicated to the prevention and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, has become increasingly interested in several initiatives that could educate and enrich our community.

The victim of a sudden cardiac arrest has a 50 to75 % chance of being resuscitated if a shock is administered to the heart within 5 minutes of collapsing, before the lack of circulation begins causing irreversible damage to the most vital organs. The chance of a patient surviving a cardiac arrest decreases by about 10% per minute after collapse and it is minimal after 10 minutes. Therefore, immediate intervention is essential .

In 2006, following a series of sudden deaths in young athletes, the foundation donated almost 400 AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) to every school in the Houston and Spring Branch districts and to Rice University and to several private schools in the area. As part of this gift, they also distributed training vouchers, so that key personnel in the schools could receive instructions on the use and maintenance of the AEDs.

In 2007, as the Institute began following up on the results of their donation, they learned that awareness of the presence and location of these devices on school ground was inadequate and, presumably, so was the training.

The Houston Texans, American Red Cross, Texas Arrhythmia Institute and Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center have joined forces to offer this training day to the Houston community.
