Seventeen Rotary Clubs from District 5890 were represented at the 2011 Gulf Coast Leadership Institute held at the Northwest Forest Conference Center on September 10-11, 2011. The Institute helps Rotarians improve their personal leadership skills using a highly interactive program led by a team of 13 Facilitators, skilled in adult learning from all corners of the District.

Over the 2 day course participants experience training modules on generational differences, conflict management, personal accountability, meeting management, ethics, social styles, empowerment, servant leadership and listening skills.   A special memorial remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States was a highlight of this Institute and showed a brief video on the response to the attacks by the Rotary Club of New York City.

The Northwest Forest Conference Center (formerly the Quick Copy Corporate Training Facility) has the latest technology used in adult learning and is located in a wooded campus with several training venues, walking paths, recreational opportunities and full service food and beverage capabilities

Rotary Clubs in District 5890 can send up to two participants to go through the training program.  This class of participants included Rotarians from 13 Rotary Clubs in the district with memberships ranging from ten to over two hundred Rotarians.  Plans are being formulated to hold two Institutes during calendar year 2012: in February and September.  The registration fee for attendance is $250 and covers all meals, materials and overnight lodging.  Clubs are limited to sending a maximum of two participants to the Institute.  Past participants have said that attendance at the Institute has helped them in taking on greater responsibilities in their Rotary club as well as other volunteer community organizations.
