Rotary District 5890 Global Scholar Anja Nikolova completed exams for her first year at Yale University last week and began the second year of her scholarship in September. A condition of her Yale studies is that she must complete an internship between her two years of studies and she returned to the U.S. on June 7 from her family home in Skopje, Macedonia to begin work with the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition(CPLC) in Washington. CPLC is a World Bank and International Finance Corporation led intitiative focusing on climate change. Before returning to the U.S.  she attended the Carbon Expo workshop in Cologne, Germany.

At CPLC Anja worked directly with companies such as BP, Shell, IKEA, Royal DSM and Unilever and the governments of Canada, India, France. The insights she produced helped these companies to design and implement their carbon pricing strategy as a business driver and towards achieving their environmental goals.

Over the summer, Tandem Language Café, the program Anja co-founded, received investment capital and is expanding - they are currently hiring 4 new staff and partnering with Yale’s numerous departments - it’s very exciting, and has become her entrepreneurial experiment! They also launched their website:  https://tandemyale.wordpress.com/about/

District 5890 shares sponsorship of Anja's second scholarship year with Rotary Districts 5930 (Texas), 5840 (Texas), 5770 (Oklahoma), and 7980 (New Haven). Her first year Rotary Global Scholarship was funded by our District 5890.
The Rotarian Magazine has agreeed to conduct a Q and A with Anja for publication this coming winter.
