~ PDG Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, Will Be Our Rotary International President's Representative ~
~ In 1987, She Was The First Woman To Serve as President of a Rotary Club In Rotary! ~
We are beyond excited that Rotary International President, Shekhar Mehta, has selected a pioneer in Rotary to represent him as his RI President's Representative...PDG Dr. Sylvia Whitlock!

Why is she a pioneer?  In 1987, Dr. Sylvia Whitlock became president of the Rotary Club of Duarte making her the very first woman to hold such a position in the world of Rotary.

The Rotary Club of Duarte, California, was chartered in District 530 in 1952. But just before its twenty-fifth birthday in 1976, the Duarte club violated Rotary's bylaws by inviting women to join, ultimately causing the club's charter to be unceremoniously revoked by Rotary International.

Undeterred, the club renamed itself the "Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte" and its members continued on their quest not to be outcasts of one of the greatest humanitarian organizations in the world.  The Duarte club filed suit in the California courts claiming that Rotary Clubs are business establishments subject to regulation under California's Unruh Civil Rights Act, a law that bans discrimination based on race, gender, religion or ethnic origin. Rotary International appealed the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

On May 4, 1987, the United States Supreme Court confirmed the Californian decision supporting women (click button below to watch video), in the case Board of Directors, Rotary International v. Rotary Club of Duarte. After the ruling, Rotary International ended their policy of gender restrictions.

Sylvia served as club president twice at her Rotary Club of Duarte and at various times served as club secretary, treasurer and Foundation Representative. At district level, she chaired the Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee for six years, has been assistant governor, presenter at Institutes and a speaker at Rotary Clubs, Conventions and meeting in the US as well as overseas.  She's loved by everyone!
