Zoom Tips & Etiquette

Etiquette

  • Join early – up to 5 minutes before the meeting start time
  • If you haven’t used Zoom before, click here to download Zoom prior to the meeting and familiarize yourself with any features you may need to use on the day – mute/unmute microphone, stop/start video, etc.
  • Have your video on unless you are experiencing connection issues
  • Remain muted unless speaking
  • Consider using headphones for better audio quality and less background noise
  • Find a quiet space without interruptions or background noise
  • Have a plain background – avoid backlight from bright windows
  • Have good lighting on your face so you can be seen clearly
  • Adjust your camera to be at around eye level if possible – especially take note of the angle of your laptop screen if using the built-in camera.
  • Be aware you are on camera and try to avoid doing other tasks, checking emails, looking at your phone etc.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can press and hold the spacebar to quickly unmute your mic and release to mute yourself again.
  • To view up to 49 people on one screen, click the tab that says "Gallery view" in the top right corner.
  • Click the arrow next to Start/Stop Video to open video settings. You can use a virtual background, hide participants who have their video off, adjust your video for low light, etc.
