Rotary District 5370 Office Hours
Deneen Lafreniere-Roth, our office manager, will be on holidays from November 14 to 18, 2022 and the Rotary District office will be closed.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Building Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) on Oct. 22, 2022!  We had a great turn out and lots of fun was had and many beds were constructed –   35 beds were built.  We will certainly make an impact for these children. 
Now we need to deliver these beds to the children.  The training date (to learn how to put the beds together at the children’s home) is November 5th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Once the training is complete, we will deliver a couple of beds in the afternoon to those who need the beds.  This is a great way to experience the impact of our efforts and see the faces of the children who are in need of a bed. 
 
If you are interested in coming to the training session, please reach out to Kelly Baker at kelly@rotaryedmontonnortheast.org and she will register you for the training session on Nov. 5th, 2022.  The bed building will take place again at Dow Chemicals in Fort Saskatchewan
 
There will be additional delivery dates (TBA) so once you have the training you will be called upon to help deliver and build the beds to our Ukrainian families (delivery dates to be determined).  This is a worthy and needed project so every effort is much appreciated. 
In addition to the building of beds, bed linens are in great need.  Bed sheets (twin, double, and queen), quilts, and pillows are what we need most.  Please save the date for November 19th, 2022 for a bed linen drive where we will be “Stuffing the Van” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.   We will be parking at van at Kingsway Mall (hopefully by the Walmart entrance) in Edmonton and asking for donations of bed linen, quilts and/or pillows so we can “Stuff the Van”.    The linen will be given to the Ukrainian Refugees who are being given beds.
 
We need volunteers to come out to do a 2 hour shift throughout the day at Kingsway Mall to help with the stuffing of the van.

Hello fellow Rotarians!
 
We are pleased to announce that the Rotary e-Club of Canada One has a NEW Food Insecurity Committee!
 
Our first project starts in Canada. Based on the latest data from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Income Survey, 5.8 million Canadians, including 1.4 million children, lived in food-insecure households in 2021.
 
In a recent article, with the headline "Child hunger a major concern as Canadians hit by soaring food prices, it was noted that "about a third of people who rely on Canadian food banks are children". Many food banks across the country are reporting a 20 to 30% jump in demand. As prices continue to rise, food policy expert says things will only get worse.
 
According to Food Banks Canada, 23% of Canadians reported eating less than they needed to because they did not have enough money for groceries. Now, more than ever, they need our help
 
As we plan behind the scenes for a large event next October, we invite Rotary members to participate in a year-long Food Bank Donation Challenge, building up to the event. 
 
Each month, we'll post a suggested list of 5 items. These may include non-food, necessity items. Feel free to play along and purchase those items, or items of your choice, and deliver them to your local Food Bank. Or, you may want to check with your local food bank first to see what they are low on at the moment. Alternatively, you may prefer to provide them with a monetary donation or monthly pledge. 
 
Invite your friends, family, colleagues, and social media connections to participate. We ask everyone to keep track of their donations and, at the end of each month, submit them to Kitt at kittbrand@gmail.com, so we can track the impact of our contributions. Let's see what the power of Rotary can do for our food banks!

Our donors’ impact to the Foundation is vital. Learn about the Foundations funds and programs that benefit from your donations.

As November is Foundation month, it is the perfect time to reflect on the importance of the work that RFHA does through its Rotary Family Health Days program, which are happening in Nigeria across 150 sites RIGHT NOW, AS YOU READ THIS.  

In a recent interview with Dr Tunji Funsho, a former cardiologist and now the chair of Rotary International’s polio-eradication program in Nigeria, Dr Funsho emphasised the importance of ensuring that every child between 0-5 years is vaccinated against the Wild Polio Virus, as this is the key to putting a lid on the recent surge in cases. 

In Africa this means going door to door to administer the vaccine, and also rolling out Rotary Family Health Days in remote communities as so many more people can be reached at once.

Each person attending a Rotary Family Health Day receives an average of 7.2 medical services including Polio vaccinations, Hepatitis A and B vaccinations, mosquito nets, HIV/ AIDS screenings and cancer screenings.

A donation of $50 will cover the cost of all of these for one person - helping to ensure that we are one step closer to eradicating Polio and other preventable diseases.

District 5370 Fall Assembly
DISTRICT FALL ASSEMBLY IS BACK!
 
After a two-year hiatus, our annual District Fall Assembly is back! With the theme Inspiration – Education – Recognition, we will once again gather both in person and virtually on Saturday, November 26 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Château Nova Yellowhead Hotel, 13920 Yellowhead Trail in Edmonton.
 
The Assembly is open to all Rotarians, but we highly encourage Presidents-elect and their leadership teams to attend as part of PETS training. Registration fees are free for Presidents-elect, (President-elect fees are covered through your club's PETS Training contribution), $60 for Rotarians attending in person and $25 for online registration. Please note that gaming revenue can be used for training purposes.

Rotary District 5370 is seeking nominations for District Governor for the 2025-26 Rotary year
Serving as District Governor (DG) is a wonderful opportunity to experience the great things our clubs do to create lasting change in local communities throughout our District and around the world. 
 
We are looking for someone who is passionate about Rotary, who has served as a Club President, is a Rotarian in good standing of a district club for at least five years at the time of nomination, and perhaps even served at the District 5370 Committee level.  The ideal candidate should have a very positive outlook, with proven management skills and a demonstrated ability to engage others in achieving positive impact. We have many wonderful Rotarian leaders in our District who could fulfill this important role.
 
I urge you to take action by stepping forward or encouraging a fellow Rotarian to consider the role.

What is Rotary Friendship Exchange? 
 
Friendship Exchange is an international program for Rotary members and friends that allow participants turns hosting one another in their clubs and homes. 
 
Participants may travel as individuals, couples or groups, and may be Rotary members or not.

Attention all quilters! 
News Flash:  Rotarians and non-Rotarian quilters attending the District Conference in April 2023 are invited to sell their quilted goods in the Marketplace and contribute to the Rotary Foundation Canada!
 
 
Here’s how:
  • Email Donna Nicoll @ donna.nicoll@telus.net to indicate your interest in participating. She will assign you a Vendor Number.
  • Bring your quilted item(s) to the District Conference to the Quilters’ Booth in the Marketplace.  Attach a tag to each item with your Vendor Number and the % of the selling price that you will donate to The Rotary Foundation Canada with a
minimum being 20%.
  • After your item(s) has/have been sold you will be on your honour to donate the amount indicated on the ticket to the Foundation – your choice of the Annual Fund or Polio Plus. You will get a tax receipt from TRF and the points will be added towards your Paul Harris.
 
Some things to know:
  • Each item will be tagged with your Vendor Number, the selling price and the percentage of the selling price that you will contribute to the Foundation  --  a minimum of 20%.
  • Each contributor agrees to volunteer at the booth for a short time during the conference.
  • Contributors will be responsible for picking up any unsold items at the conclusion of the Marketplace (3pm on Saturday at the latest).
  • Rotary International District 5370 or the 2022 – 2023 District Conference or the Jasper Park Lodge accepts no liability for lost or stolen items.
