Our Rotary District is huge, the third largest in the world, even before the addition of the Yukon territories in July of 2019. It has over 100 clubs, all affiliated with Rotary International; Rotary, Interact, Rotaract and Earlyact. Those local clubs have members who are filled with the spirit of volunteerism; working together as friends to fundraise and support their communities, and other communities overseas.
Welcome to the New Rotary Year.
The Rotary, Rotaract, Interact, and Earlyact Clubs of District 5370 connect people of action across three provinces and two territories. Our large district is located on the traditional lands of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples in Treaties 6, 8, and 11 including a number of Metis settlements. We respect the rich histories, languages, and cultures of all First Peoples, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant communities. At this important time in our history, The Truth and Reconciliation Commission report reminds us that “Reconciliation is not about ‘closing a sad chapter of Canada’s past,’ but about opening new healing pathways of reconciliation that are forged in truth and justice” (Retrieved January 31, 2019)
It is my hope that as Rotarians following the four-way test, we will contribute to this process.
The Clubs across Rotary District 5370 have been living our motto, Service Above Self, by making contributions to our local and global communities since our first Club was chartered over 100 years ago. Efforts that were ongoing during the pandemic and continue today.
We can all be proud that Rotary’s decades long commitment to eradicating polio resulted this year in Africa officially being declared wild polio virus free. The polio eradication infrastructure has provided critical support to the COVID-19 response in many vulnerable countries and plays a continual role in other health efforts, such as the availability of additional medical treatments and vaccines, bed nets to prevent malaria, access to clean water, and even soap for hand washing.
Rotarians and Rotaractors also support education, grow local economies, save mothers and children, promote peace, and provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene around the world.
Rotary has long supported projects to sustain the environment and this year protecting the environment has become a distinct area of focus.
Rotary International President Shekhar Metha is encouraging us to “dream big”, to continue our efforts to Serve to Change Lives.
Bruce and I are excited about the upcoming Rotary year and in particular the opportunity to connect with Clubs to celebrate their many accomplishments and contributions. We also look forward to sharing ideas on how together we can grow Rotary and the impact of Rotary service across the district and beyond.
