We are in the process of coordinating our relief efforts to the people of the Philippines, but just as important we are also developing the methodology needed to develop an infrastructure within our District for future disasters and our ability to assist in a meaningful and timely manner.  Governor Doug, DGE Elsa Gillham, Sr. Assistant Governor of International Service Marc Benard, Historic Filipinotown Club President Leo, members of that club and District Administrator Tori Hettinger recently discussed how best to accomplish what is needed and how to best respond.

Taking the advice from Rotarians within the Philippines, we have begun the process of working with them to determine the specific items in need.  This is important, we are told, because in the initial flurry of sending clothing, food, etc., many of the items were not needed or were too cumbersome to be sorted and distributed once on the ground.  What Rotary excels in is providing substance more than relief. It is the process of restoring shelter and dignity that will be more lasting than temporary.

Towards that goal, we are securing warehouse space, gathering the list of specific items needed, and determining transportation methods that will place the goods into the right Rotary hands upon setting down and collection points within our District.

Cash donations can be made to “District 5280” and marked “Filipino Relief”. These funds will be distributed through our local Club contacts with a full accounting for the funds.  (This is at the request of President Leo and we are delighted to undertake)Please send checks to the District Office at 8939 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Suite 210, Los Angeles, CA 90045.

In the days to come, look for more announcements about what the people of the Philippines need, how to get it, and help!

It’s what we do.
