District Governor Bette Hall: Welcome to the new Rotary year!
District Governor Bette Hall: Welcome to the new Rotary year!Rotary Opens Opportunities! Who would have thought when RI President Holger Knaack announced our theme at the International Assembly in January 2020 just what opportunities would be opened! Who would have thought that the Rotary year of 2020-21 would be opening with so many different challenges, but also with so many opportunities and rewards. There are opportunities to reach out and serve our communities in ways that no-one had ever thought of before. There are opportunities to find new and innovative ways to hold meetings. There are opportunities to be creative in fundraising without adding costs. The list goes on and on. Through all this we have shown just how flexible and adaptable we can be, and much like the motto of the Post Office, neither snow nor heat nor gloom of night (except in our case it is COVID-19) will keep us from what we do best, “Service Above Self.” We will continue to face challenges during the start of the 2020-21 year, but our aim is to continue to ‘DOGOODERY” within our District! As we have moved forward, the class of 2020-21 Presidents have amazed me with their resilience, their enthusiasm, and creativity. I can tell you that this District is in such good hands with these Club Presidents, and I am so very proud and honored, and yes more than excited, to have the opportunity to work with them and all of you during the 2020-21 year as your District Governor. In addition, we also extremely fortunate to have an incredible group of Rotarians who have stepped forward to take on leadership roles in the District and I am so grateful to them for giving up their time and putting their energies into this very vibrant, busy District. While we do not currently know which of our planned events we will be able to hold, or indeed what format events will be held in, we are looking to “Grow Rotary” over this year, with ideas abounding from our extremely enthusiastic and energetic leadership teams. We need to continue to demonstrate that we are “People of Action”, that we embrace the challenge of change and we will strive to listen and hear the voices in our communities. I cannot end without saying a HUGE thank you and so many congratulations to our now IPDG Melody St. John for a job incredibly well done and that Fun Meter must now be thoroughly worn out for a year full of fun and energy! -Bette Hall District Governor, 2020-2021

We are in the home stretch to a 100% polio-free world! The last stage is challenging but essential. We cannot rest until the world has no new reported cases of the wild polio virus for three years. Of the 125 countries identified as polio-endemic in 1988, only two remain - truly remarkable! What can you do? 2018-19 District Governor Joe VasquezIt’s official! Governor Joe begins first day on the job. Tori Hettinger, District Office Administrator and President of Westchester Club, gives Governor Joe keys to the District Office. Here he is seen trying hard to do simple task of unlocking door with key. This time marks an annual tradition in Rotary. We see new club presidents and leaders eager to begin their work serving our members. We see club members beginning to plan local service projects and other club events. This reminds one of spring time. All around us, life awakens. So, to, in Rotary. Under new leadership and direction, we summon in ourselves a heightened sense to unit with our fellow members to “do good”. We each hold the key to unlock the full potential of giving of ourselves to serve others. Together as People of Action we can help make the lives of others brighter. |

We Are Celebrating World Polio Day On October 24Did you know that World Polio Day will be celebrated on October 24th? We have much to celebrate, as the number of cases that have been reported in 2017 is just nine (9) as of the end of August. We need to keep our fellow Rotarians, friends and family members aware that we haven't reached the finish line yet! The year 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every Rotarian in our District 5280 would donate at least $19 or $20 to finish the job of eliminating polio forever? Already this year, so many Rotarians and clubs throughout the District have contributed to Polio Plus. Rob's Run was a wonderful kick-off event to publicize and raise funds for Polio Plus! |

PDG Jim Hamai Has Passed AwayLast week, Past District Governor, James "Jim" Hamai passed away in Cypress, California. He, with the support of his lovely wife Dorothy, led District 5280 in the Rotary year 1982-83. He was a long time member of the Lawndale Rotary Club. He had many friends in Rotary not only in District 5280, but leading Rotarians around the world. He was very committed to the Rotary Foundation, and through his leadership, he inspired his Lawndale Club to be one of the top ten per capita Rotary Clubs in the world in giving to the Foundation. He also developed a life long friendship with his fellow Governor elect classmate in Oshikaga East Rotary club in Japan. The two PDGs arranged a club to club exchange with the youth in both Oshikaga East and the Lawndale Rotary clubs that lasted over 35 years. The children and grandchildren would spend one month each summer in Oshikaga Japan, then return with their Japanese guests to Lawndale for a month visit. These were such powerful and educational experiences for those who participated in these exchanges. Jim's dedication to Rotary, and its ideals, will continue to influence Rotarians now and in the future. |

Let's Make History Again!Through the commitment by Rotarians for the past 31 years, the cases of polio in our world from over 350,000 cases in 1986 has diminished to just a handful of cases this calendar year. There have only been four cases of polio reported this year, in just two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rotary District 5280 has accomplished so many good works through the efforts of its individual members. Last year, we were the first Rotary District in the world to have every individual member contribute to Polio Plus. This was a huge accomplishment! This year, we are attempting to accomplish this again for the second year in a row. |

Why Do We Still Need To Donate To Polio Plus? Many Rotarians, and non Rotarians alike, have asked the question, "So why do we still need to donate to Polio Plus? This disease is practically gone!" Well, it is not gone, and if we are not vigilant, the disease could rise up and become an epidemic again in our world. We are so very close to eliminating this dreaded disease forever. We need to continue to immunize children in the third world countries so those that cross the borders from Afghanistan and Pakistan do not spread the disease. There have only been four cases of polio this calendar year, which occurred in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Two years ago there were a total of 74 cases; last year there were a total of 35 cases. Rotary International is so very hopeful that within two years, the disease will no longer appear in our world. |

"SOLD" A Film About Human TraffickingSOLD is a narrative, feature film adaptation of the globally acclaimed novel by Patricia McCormick. Based on true stories, SOLD, is the story of Lakshmi who journeys from a pastoral, rural village in Nepal to a gritty brothel/prison called Happiness House in Kolkata, India. Through one extraordinary girl’s story, SOLD illustrates the brutality of child trafficking, which affects millions of children around the globe every year. Globally the average age of a trafficked girl is thirteen, the same age as the girl in the film. SOLD was executive produced by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson. SOLD tells the story of an unforgettable 13 year-old girl and is both a call to action and a testament to the power and resilience of the human spirit. |

Let's End Polio Now!Rotary has accomplished so much during our 31 year history of efforts to eliminate polio forever! Rotary International has shared the following information for all Rotarians.
India has not reported a polio case since 2011, thanks largely in part to massive vaccination and surveillance campaigns that led to the country being officially certified polio-free in 2014. Subnational Immunizations Days continue in order keep India polio-free. For the first time, Rotary International staff members worked alongside health workers and volunteers in the field to help with polio eradication efforts. The World Health Organization along with Rotary International continue to provide immunizations to keep India polio free. |

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every Rotarian in our District 5280 would donate this amount to finish the job of eliminating polio forever? We already have clubs that have reached this goal. Congratulations, District 5280 Rotarians! You did it!Congratulations to each club, and each member, in our Rotary 5280 District! Through the combined efforts of everyone in our District, we have almost $18,000 in donations contributed to individual Polio Plus accounts during this spring 2016 drive. We have shown the solidarity of our District Rotarians in their efforts to honor the workers and security officers that were killed during the past 27 months in Pakistan that were giving polio immunizations to finish the job of eliminating polio forever. We are likely the first District in the world to accomplish this large scope of donations from every Rotarian in our District for Polio Plus in one Rotary year. Congratulations for moving this terrible Tragedy in Pakistan to Triumph of eliminating polio forever by your personal support and contributions! -Shirley Giltzow, District 5280 , Polio Plus Chair |

Pakistan Bombing: From Tragedy To TriumphJohn Hewko, Rotary International General Secretary, announced this past week 15 security officers and civilians were killed outside a polio immunization center in Pakistan. Even more tragic, a total of 65 health workers have been killed in the past two years doing the good works of Rotary by providing immunizations in Pakistan (read his statement here).
From this terrible tragedy, we are determined to triumph by finishing the job of eliminating polio forever in whatever country it still exists, which is now only Pakistan and Afghanistan. These workers gave their lives for the cause of eliminating polio. In tribute to these workers, and to the determination of Rotarians in District 5280, I challenge every Rotarian in our District to make a donation, no matter the amount of the donation, to Polio Plus during this next month.

District Breakfast October 20- Keynote Speaker Gil GarcettiJoin us for a dynamic District Breakfast on October 20, featuring keynote speaker Gil Garcetti. Since leaving the District Attorney’s office in 2000, Gil (father of Mayor Eric Garcetti) has become a full time photographer with seven published books and exhibitions and presentations around the world. Perhaps his most consequential book, Water Is Key, focuses on the rural villages of West Africa where millions do not have access to safe water. With his photographs, essays, and stories from six trips to West Africa, Gil is able to motivate his audiences to help the rural villagers by bringing a bore hole well to their village, dramatically improve the sanitation, and provide resources for micro-credit entrepreneurs. As such, Gil is the perfect person to help us officially launch the effort in our District to raise a ONE MILLION DOLLAR Global Grant to improve the lives and health of over 25,000 Nigerians by providing increased access to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene. Polio Headlines As of July 1, 2015The World Health Organization has released the latest statistics on polio cases worldwide. In its report, the WHO states, "In June, the wild poliovirus outbreaks in Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia and Kenya were assessed to be over by independent teams, having successfully interrupted transmission of the virus. While this is a sign that supplementary immunization activities and acute flaccid paralysis have been strengthened since all of the outbreaks began in 2013, it is essential for these gains to be maintained and built upon in order to protect children within these countries from the return of the virus. District Governor DJ Sun's MessageIt is time to start the new Rotary year with new leadership and fresh ideas. The incoming club presidents and District leaders have been prepared for their responsibilities through numerous training and educational seminars.
Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran has chosen a beautiful theme for his year: "Be a gift to the world". Isn't it nice that we can provide a precious gift to someone? Rotarians have the power and capability to deliver wishes, whether they be clean water for remote villages, surgery for deformed children, eradication of the polio virus from the earth and the provision of tools for education. For over a century, Rotary International has built up a worldwide infrastructure with the most qualified human resources in any given region. Rotarians can address problems in our communities and around the world. We have the ability. We have the tools. It is up to us to engage and utilize our resources to improve the human condition.
In order to facilitate the development of of acquaintance as an opportunity for service, our District is developing an e-directory to help members network. Each member will be included in a Rotary database searchable by profession. This year many clubs in our District will focus on projects within our community that have relevance, sustainability, and a substantive impact. We will strive for a new balance in our projects by allocating our funds for our community and the world. There are many local and global projects lined up for our members to involve themselves. Using the tools that Rotary has provided, we will achieve new levels of success in these endeavors.
Let's make our Rotary the most respected charity organization in our community. Let's engage in Rotary activities with high energy, great passion, and the desire to change lives for the better. Let's operate our organization in an efficient and productive manner. Let's be a gift to the community and the world.
Ellen and I look forward to serving with you this year and supporting your efforts as your serve your communities and others in need throughout the world.
-District Governor 2015-2016, DJ Sun

LA to San Francisco Bicycle Tour to End Polio by District 5280 Interactors
Spring Break is usually a time for students to go to the beach, go on vacation, or just spend time with family and friends, and having a fun time free of school studies. Well, not so for three Interactors and their faculty advisor from the Hawthorne HS Interact Club! Club members Jose Diego, Sebastian Gonzalez, Chris Rendon, and Advisor Huy Hoang, are cycling LA to San Francisco on Spring Break to raise funds for End Polio.
Their goal, on this 8-day adventure, is to ride 500 miles from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Golden Gate Bridge and raise $5000. This amount will provide vaccines for 8000 children in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. You can support them by going to GoFundMe and pledging with a contribution. WE ARE THIS CLOSE to ending polio worldwide. Won’t you join us to make this happen!

(REDONDO BEACH) May 8, 2013 -- Project Amigo began in the late 1980s when founder Ted Rose came to visit the area’s volcano, and instead found a poverty-stricken rural village a great need to support the literacy campaign. A few years later he and his wife, Susan Hill, moved to Mexico and set up shop to help the children of poor villagers. There they joined the Colima Rotary Club.
Colima, Mexico is an agricultural town which attracts many other residents from different regions of Mexico. Currently the population in Colima is approximately 2,000 people. Project Amigo is enabling the poor children of Colima to achieve their highest potential by providing educational opportunities, material support, enrichment activities, medical and dental services.
How successful are they? Well, they currently have 34 university graduates, 100 kids enrolled in higher education and 200 in elementary school that have benefited from Project Amigo. . Noe and Mireya are two great examples of the success of the university of Colima. They both graduated from there and both stayed in the community to continue to improve the conditions of this town and also to ensure the literacy campaign continues to strengthen. There are several humanitarian service projects that are ongoing through Project Amigo.
Ted and Susan are also here to reach out to other clubs in hopes of gaining support for scholarship programs for young students in Colima. For more information visit www.projectamigo.org
Thanks to Rick Mendoza, PDG, for bringing these Rotarians and their story to us. President Nancy donated $250 club funds to Project Amigo.
The Rotary Foundation directs 90% of its spending to programs, far exceeding the benchmark of 65% that independent charity-rating services view as a measure of high efficiency. This is jut one of several important facts reported in the April 2013 edition of the TRF Zone 26 Connections newsletter. It also reports that US$4 billion has been pledged toward the final eradication of polio. Click HERE to open the newsletter.
Following the untimely passing of District Governor-Elect Jim Dyer in mid-January, the current leadership of District 5280 turned to Rotary protocol to name a replacement. After consulting with Rotary International officials in Evanston, Illinois, Governor Lew Bertrand announced that PDG Doug Baker will replace Dyer and serve as District Governor. Following is the letter he wrote to the District Leadership Team announcing the appointment:
"This is to announce to the Leadership team of D-5280 that PDG Doug Baker has graciously accepted the appointment to serve as DG for the Rotary year 2013-2014. This appointment was made in compliance with the rules and guidelines as set forth by Rotary International in the RI Manual of Procedure and RI Code of Policies. This appointment was made in concurrence with PDG Scot Clifford, District Legal Counsel, and Jim Damato, Supervisor Club Administration at Rotary International.
"These references clearly define the line of succession as:
"DGN Elsa Gillham has made it clear she is not in a position to fill the vacancy due to personal needs and business obligations at this time.
"As the current DG, I feel that bringing the 65 clubs together has been a major goal of this Rotary year. I am confident this has been accomplished and I am very proud of the cohesive efforts on the part of all District leadership resulting in the successful merging of District 5260 & 5280. I am most flattered to have been asked by many Rotarians to continue as DG for 2013-2014, but my family has made it abundantly clear – they want and need me back. I will decline this position as DG for 2013-2014.
"Next in descending seniority is PDG Brad Robinson who has declined the position.
"Please join me in acknowledging Doug Baker as DG for 2013-2014 and extending our utmost support."

The Beverly Hills Rotary Club would like to invite all of District 5280 to attend their meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel to hear Past RI President Rick King speak. One of Rotary's most popular speakers, Mr. King has addressed Rotary International Conventions, Assemblies, Institutes, Seminars, Conferences and Rotary Clubs in every state in the USA and some 100 countries. As President, he let Rotary International to its greatest one-year growth record in its 105-year history, with 75,000 New Members Net, a global membership of 1,243,431 and 1,158 New Rotary Clubs in 2001-2002, more than one new club every 8 hours. In the same year, Rotarians contributed the highest amount of money ever raised for the Annual Fund of the Rotary Foundation. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to President-Elect AJ Willmer at AJWillmer@BHRotary.org
"When we in Rotary work for peace, we don’t do it by negotiating treaties or demonstrating in the streets. Instead, we build peace by example – by working together, whatever our nationality or background, and putting others’ needs above our own. We build peace by dealing with the problems that disrupt people’s ability to live normal, peaceful lives – whether those problems are a lack of water, or sanitation, or safe, affordable housing; whether they stem from a shortage of education or health care, or a need to build productive and positive connections between communities. In everything we do, we rely on our good name.
"This is why all of us have a responsibility to be sure that our good name is indeed known. We need to not just work through Rotary, but talk about Rotary – letting the world know about the work we are doing, the differences we are making, and the benchmarks we are setting. Our Rotary work speaks to our belief that a better, more peaceful world is possible, and we need to be sure that our voices are heard."

(SAN DIEGO) This afternoon at the International Assembly, Rotary International officials announced that the Gates Foundation Challenge Grant has surpassed the US$200 million mark and has raised US$202.6 million as of 17 January 2011.
In addition Jeff Raikes, Chief Executive Officer of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was at the Assembly and announced that the Gates Foundation has awarded The Rotary Foundation an additional US$50 million grant for polio eradication. The new $50 million grant from the Gates Foundation is not a challenge grant; it results from Rotary’s early achievement of the $200 million milestone and of the need for continued funding support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. RI leaders are aware that there may be many questions concerning the additional grant from the Gates Foundation so to help answer many of these questions a Fact Sheet has been prepared. Please feel free to share the Fact Sheet with your fellow Rotarians.
"January 13, 2012 will mark one year since the last case of polio was reported in India," predicted John Osterlund, general manager of The Rotary Foundation, at the District 5280 breakfast earlier this week. Two days later the "polio-free" deadline came and went without a new case being reported. Meaning India has been free of any new cases of the dreaded disease for a year. "Now instead of the four so-called 'PAIN' countries, the only three countries remaining are Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria," he said.
Learn more about this momentous development on the Rotary International Web site and the significance it has for RI President Kalyan Banerjee. In his remarks thanking Rotarians worldwide for achieving this important milestone, President Banerjee urged avoiding complacency in Rotary's continuing effort to erradicate polio from the face of the planet.
At the recent 2nd President's Dinner at the home of District Governor Brad Robinson in Marina Del Rey, the distributed District Simplified Grants for the 2011-2012 Rotary Year were announced. Altogether 27 grants were approved with 20 checks being issued. Total amount of grants this year is $67,923.00. “We hand delivered six (6) checks and mailed to Club Presidents. It was a great evening for the Rotary Foundation,” said Chuck Anderson, PDG and chair of DSG activity this year. “A check for the Watts Learning Center for $8,000 has not yet been issued since we are trying to secure three additional clubs to sponsor in addition to Crenshaw Watts.”

An Open Letter to all Rotarians:
With your help, we have made tremendous progress in the fight to eradicate polio. We are at an historic moment -- less than 1% away from the end of polio forever. In honor of World Polio Day on 24 October 2011, we are asking for your help to tell the world about Rotary’s achievements and to finish the job.
We would like you to encourage your members to participate in two major online initiatives: a 2-for-1 donation recognition campaign and a social media push promoting Rotary’s global polio eradication efforts.
District 5280 Rotaractors gathered for a beach party and bonfire the evening of Saturday, Sept. 17th at Dockweiler Beach. They met to build their entry for the district's cardboard boat race in October. A bit of surf, a beautiful sunset over the vast Pacific Ocean, a warm bonfire complete with some old fashion s'mores. "A great time was had by all," said PDG Chuck Anderson. Click HERE for more photos.

The first District Breakfast of Governor Brad’s New Rotary Year was a rousing success! And a lot of fun too as you can tell from this picture of Sergeant at Arms, Leon Bodnar and “Rasta Man” Inglewood Club President Wayne Spencer. Guest speaker Dr. John Deasy was a wonderful speaker and left a lasting impression about public education on the minds of all who attended. Be sure to join us for the next District Breakfast on September 27th! Click here for more pictures.

Service projects are planned for Friday with youth events on Saturday at the San Diego Zoo or Sea World. Hotel rates start at $169.00 nightly. Click HERE to visit the resort’s Web site.
Immediately following the devastating tornadoes across the South, Governor Doug asked me to contact Rotary District Governors in the affected areas to see where the greatest need was and how we could help our fellow Rotarians. One of the hardest hit areas has been Northern Alabama represented by Rotary District 6860. We have been communicating with DG John Valieant and his Disaster Relief Coordinator PDG J.G. Brazil who tell us that individual Clubs, along with State and Federal agencies are responding to the immediate recovery needs. Where they are looking for help is with the long term recovery and rebuilding that will take months and in many cases years.
District 5280 Rotarian's - The 9.0-magnitude earthquake, Japan's largest in history, caused a devastating tsunami that swept over northern coastal towns. At least 10,000 people are assumed dead, but government officials say the death toll will rise. The emergency situation is still unfolding but what is clear is the immediate need for money to support relief efforts and shelter.

Over four dozen members are involved in our District leadership this year. I anticipated all of them would stay busy but I really hoped one person would have nothing to do at all! Sadly, he's been busy, too.
One of the premiere events that link Rotarians with our high school students is the Art/Music/Speech contest. This annual event is an outstanding way to not only recognize and celebrate talent among high school students, but also to engage Rotarians in serving our youth.

Airship 5280 has been assigned Flight #114 with destination to Ecuador by Governor and Chief Pilot Susanne Sundberg. Co-Pilots "Here" and "There" have successfully passed their examinations and have obtained their beginner permits. Chief Purser Pearl Leeka reports the passenger manifest is in order. It reveals about 110 members have registered for this exotic journey to spread hope and peace to a people long in need. This, after all, is the work of members in Rotary. Spaces remain available for members and others still wishing to take this journey.

Rotary is seeking non-Rotarian professionals interested in expanding their knowledge in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies and conflict resolution or a related field. Each year, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellowships (50 master's degree fellowships and 50 professional development certificate fellowships) are offered on a competitive basis at six prestigious Rotary Centers around the world.

Rotarians understand that bringing lasting change in their lives, communities and world requires working cooperatively with like-minded individuals. Every day, Rotary clubs work in concert with local governments, businesses, and other organizations to bring much needed improvements to people and communities both at home and abroad. In that spirit, Rotary International will recognize club service projects, done with other organizations, with the Best Cooperative Project Award. The award honors clubs that have increased awareness and understanding of Rotary by working with other organizations.

The idea of sending young professional adults on foreign exchanges is to open the eyes, ears and hearts of people in both countries of the exchange - to make the world a better place for all human beings. The content of this email is precisely what we want to see happen.
"Dear Chuck,
In contemplating the two amazing weeks thus far, I must thank you for encouraging me to pursue the GSE opportunity.

Thank you!

My sincerest thanks to DG Lew and all the Rotarians in our proud D5280! Group Study Exchange (GSE) team from D2620 went back to Japan on May 15 with the fondest memories and much gratitude to all of you. They enjoyed the candid conversations they had with their host families on cultural differences and similarities. They were amazed by the advanced technologies used at each vocational site they visited, including ABC7, Glendale Police Department's jail, and Dr. Brian Bergh's orthodontic clinic. They also learned California's rich mosaic history, including the Japanese Americans', Hispanics', and Armenians'.
For most of the team members, this was their first visit to Southern California. You gave them such an impression that they all want to come back to visit you. If you ever visit Japan, please make sure to contact them.
Proudly, I am reporting to you that we had a very successful final year of GSE. Many have complimented that this was the best GSE team. Our out-going GSE team received similar applauds in D2620. From next Rotary year, we will start our new tradition of Vocational Training Team and I look forward to this new exciting program.
Domo arigato again for your very warm support for GSE!

Governor Doug's December MessageWe finished our official club visits last week. As Executive Aide Extraordinaire Joe Vasquez and I reflected on what we witnessed during our 45 stops (yes I know, there are 46 clubs, but that’s too long a story!) we recognized some very common traits. My definition of a successful club is one that is high on enthusiasm, has meetings that emphasize fun and Rotary pride, and is either growing or maintaining a reasonable (20+) number of members. That certainly describes the majority of our clubs. Successful clubs are looking to the past in order to secure their future and in doing so can offer the best Holiday gift suggestion. |

District Governor Doug's November MessageIt’s all about the heart. Four years ago I had the pleasure to serve as the SAG for Foundation with a great bunch of folks under the tutorage of then-Governor Scot Clifford (in spite of his blind allegiance to UCLA) continues to be a man I admire and respect. The approach that year was different. Instead of “open your wallets” it was instead a challenge to the Foundation team: Tell the story, grab the heart and let it dictate each Rotarian’s commitment to our Foundation. |

District Governor Doug's October MessageOur name, Rotary, originated with the practice of rotating meeting sites among members’ places of business. This was done simply to allow members the opportunity of sharing their vocations with others. Our unique classification system for membership was designed to allow Rotarians the opportunity to do business with one another. From day one, the first business of Rotary was business! Over the years we have slowly grown out of the habit. |

District Governor Doug's September MessageChildren can bring out the best and the strangest parts of us! Think of the moment of their birth. We immediately love them, unconditionally. They are innocent, free of fault, trusting, loving and we introduce them to the world with “baby talk”. Our high pitch “goo goo” talk is the first hint of communication they hear. We brag, we compare and we hope for the best. But then, at some point the reality of the situation seeps into view. |

Governor's August MessageWhile official Governor’s visits don’t start until August, I attended many clubs in July, each different, all somewhat the same. It started in Manhattan Beach where all were subjected to President Roger Cox singing the National Anthem. The New Zealand anthem. While wearing a purple suit. Hollywood President Melody St. John’s meeting started with a call to stand and applaud, for no apparent reason, but the energy it generated was contagious. Two new members were also inducted and having that honor was quite a thrill. A week later with President Esperanza Galvan at South Gate I again had the thrill of inducting two new members. The introduced me as Don Baker, in spite of the very professional agendas at each table. They also had the most unusual speaker gift. Salmon. In a jar. A glass jar. |
