Niger Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project

District 5280 Governor D. J. Sun has committed the district to an ambitious $1M project to provide safe water and improved sanitation to villages in Niger, the poorest country in the world.

For more on the project, see the excellent article by Lorine Parks of the Downey Club in the District 5280 October Newsletter.
World Vision, a non-profit with which Rotary has been cooperating for over 10 years, will contribute $500K to the effort. It’s up to Rotary to come up with the other $500K.

Also, Larry Johnson, Past President of the Manhattan Beach Club, has secured a pledge of $100K from Wells Bring Hope, a non-profit focused on water projects in West Africa, on whose board Larry serves.

The Rotary Foundation (TRF) matches contributions of District Designated Funds (DDF) by Districts dollar for dollar. TRF matches contributions by clubs and third party organizations 50 cents to the dollar.

Cases in point:

DG D.J. has pledged $60K in DDF to the project. With the TRF match, this doubles to $120K.

With the $0.50 to $1.00 match by TRF, the contribution of Wells Bring Hope will total $150K.

Several clubs and individual Rotarians have already pledged to the project. To see our current status, click here.
