The U.S. Rotary Clubs and Districts Liability Insurance Program ("Program") provides general liability (GL) and directors' & officers'/employment practices liability (D&O/EPL) insurance coverage automatically to active U.S. Rotary Clubs & Districts.

Dear current and incoming U.S. Rotary club officers:

This message is to advise you about:

  *   The 2020-21 insurance assessment rates charged on the upcoming July Club Invoice,
  *   Information pertaining to the communicable disease exclusion on the general liability policies,
  *   Advising of the availability of the 2020-21 Certificate of Insurance on Gallagher Insight.

These assessments cover the cost of insurance provided under the U.S. Rotary Club and District Liability Insurance Program. They fund the $250,000 self-insured retention of every general liability claim; $25,000 deductible of every directors’ and officers’/employment practices liability (D&O/EPL) claim; and the cost of the commercial insurance. The assessment amounts are calculated annually by an actuary and depend on claims activity per state, funding needs of the self-insured retention, the cost of commercial insurance, and premium credit for past claims history.

In the last twelve months, the cost of commercial insurance has risen significantly due to a toughening insurance market. At the same time, insurance companies are including new limitations restricting insurance coverage. Many organizations are experiencing both steep increases of insurance costs and new limitations to coverage when renewing their insurance policies. The U.S. Rotary Club and District Insurance Program was also affected by these changes; though the increases in the commercial insurance costs were partially offset by stable pricing of the self-insured retention and applied premium credits. Premium credits, from the 2019-20 policy year, were due to lower claim activity and included an additional reduction as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

2020-21 general liability assessments have increased by 8%, while D&O/EPL insurance assessments have increased by 84%. Though the D&O/EPL percentage increase is significant, D&O/EPL assessments continue to be under $1 per member. The assessment rates by state and per member are shown below.

The general liability policy for U.S. Rotary clubs & districts effective 1 July 2020 excludes coverage for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. The global pandemic has created tremendous challenges for the Rotary community as well as the insurance industry. As insurers are inundated with COVID-19 claims for loss of business, most insurers are now excluding coverage for liability claims arising out of communicable diseases including COVID-19.

Some state governments are currently assessing various measures to limit liability arising out of COVID-19. If you are concerned about how to protect your club from COVID-19 claims, we recommend that your club or district consult with a local insurance broker about potential coverage options.

Determining how to reopen and operate safely in this new environment is an issue facing nearly all businesses and entities alike. When assessing how to resume operations, we suggest you follow any and all applicable guidelines from the CDC, and state and local regulations.
