We have a brand new Board for 2022-23 with experienced and dedicated Directors. Rotary has identified a theme for each month to highlight the wide range of Rotary’s work. The theme messages for each month will be written by the Director responsible for the particular Theme.
This month's theme is Membership and New Club Development and the message below is from Director Gene Vickers.
This is the August issue of the Peace Arch Journal, the monthly publication of Rotary District 5050. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this month's edition as I wasn't able to make it to the two big events north of the border last month. We're still looking for occasional field reporters and photographers in the various areas of our District. If you are willing to help out, please drop me a line. My Inbox is pretty lonely.
Just got this in right before we went to press. SAVE THE DATE!! For the 2023 District Conference, 5 - 7 May 2023, Surrey, British Columbia. We'll have more information in upcoming editions of the Peace Arch Journal.

How are you exemplifying the Rotary motto -- Service Above Self?
Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment,
That would be Sunday, 10 July as White Rock turned on its charm to welcome the first woman to become president of Rotary International. She is Jennifer Jones from Windsor, Ontario who was winding up a tour of Canada from Newfoundland to Victoria, including a visit to the Northern Territories.
Dozens of smiling Rotarians from the United States and Canada were joined by members of the public, mingling in the sunshine at Memorial Park where Rotarians had set up a stage with banners, the famous Rotary wheel and chairs for the audience.
President Jennifer mingled with just about everyone, posing for photos and warmly greeting all. On stage she was welcomed by White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker. Jones spoke of her “Image” for Rotary, partly based on the John Lennon song - “Imagine.”

She shared that her tour included discussion of reconciliation and open dialogue. “The power of that is so important,” she said, “because it speaks to who we are as an organization.” She added, “We represent the best – the best of our world. We have the ability to break down barriers. Even though Rotary is in some 200 countries and geographical areas, we are one together. If something happens to someone in another part of the world or another country, as part of our Rotary family it touches all of us.”
Jennifer is the first woman elected International President in Rotary’s 117 years, ironic because women were not welcome in the early years. They fought to become Rotarians and have since played leadership roles in many Clubs and Districts. Rotary’s 1.2 million members are part of 34,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide.
President Jones was due to end her tour the next day in Victoria.
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our fellow Rotarian and Past District Governor Harv Jubie on 8 May 2022.
Harvey Russell Jubie was born 2 August 1942, in Everett, Washington. After graduating from Lake Stevens High School in 1960, Harv started an electrical apprenticeship and received his journeyman card in 1964 at the age of 22. He served in the Washington State National Guard between 1964 and 1970. In 1967, he started his own company called Jubie Electric and built houses on the side. In the 1980’s, Harv quit the electrical business and concentrated on construction, building both residential and commercial rental properties.
Harv joined the Marysville Noon Rotary in 1991, serving as President for the 1998 – 1999 Rotary year and was District Governor in 2005-2006. He was active in the community and served on the boards of the Providence General Foundation, Marysville Chamber of Commerce, and the Marysville YMCA.
If ever a man embodied the spirit of Rotary, it was Harv. Twenty years in a row, along with other local Rotarians, he traveled to remote villages in the mountains of Guatemala to build schools through Hands for Peacemaking, forever impacting the lives of thousands of children.
Harv was a caring man who loved people and looked for opportunities to serve others.
Our sincere condolences go out to his family and particularly to his wife of fifty-five years, Jan.
District 5050 Rotarians and guests assembled at the White Rock BC Community Centre to install the District 5050 leadership team for 2022-2023, including District Governor Raj Rajagopal. Rotarian Peter Tam’s trio provided music while guests assembled. The trio also accompanied the national anthems of the United States and Canada and provided dance music after the formal installation.
Following a catered buffet dinner, the master of ceremonies, PDG Bill Robson introduced special guests and Past District Governors who were present. Special guests included Rotary Foundation Trustee, Dean Rohrs and husband Rhino. Dean did the honor of installing our new District Governor, the Assistant Governors, officers, and directors for 2022-2023.
Immediate Past District Governor, Bev Harrington, assisted by District Awards Chair Dave Duskin, gave out the “Best in the District” Club Awards as well as individual awards—see separate story. IPDG Bev also recognized those who served in leadership roles during her year and reviewed a few highlights of the year.
I am honored to Serve as your District Membership Chair once again. I am currently looking for two more people to serve on our Membership Committee. We would love to have an enthusiastic Rotaract member to help us focus on turning Interactors into Rotaractors and then Rotaractors into Rotarians. Also, we would love to have a Rotary Retention Chair. Please feel free to contact me at my email address.
We have a few initiatives planned to increase membership for our Clubs and would love to see District 5050 grow by four new Clubs this year.
I will be the keynote speaker at a Toastmasters Leadership Institute on Saturday 6 Aug…sharing the features, values, and benefits of being a Rotarian to Toastmasters and at the same time, sharing incredible values of Toastmasters that our Rotarians may consider. Throughout our Rotary year, I will work together with an amazing team creating a stronger bond than ever between the two organizations.
There will be a Zoom meeting for all of our District Clubs with shared ideas on how to retain our members…grow members and make our meetings more fun and exciting on Saturday 17 Sept 9:00 – 11:20 am. We will share the full details to all of our Clubs soon. Let’s have an amazing Rotary year ensuring our Clubs are stronger and more fun than ever.
This year Rotary Clubs of Mission and Mission Mid Day had a joint installation dinner to welcome its newest Interact Club and usher in their incoming executives. This past year was particularly special as both Clubs were jointly recognized with a “2022 Lifetime Achievement Award” by the City of Mission.
The installation was held at the Mission City Conference Center on 23 June 2022 to welcome the newest Club to Mission, the Interact Club of Mission. Mission Rotarians and their families were joined by Rotary District 5050 Governor, Bev Harrington, Area Governor Ken Holland, Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas President Aman Gill, and Rotary Club of Haney incoming president Rajinder Chhina and Past President Jesse Sidhu.
At the District Installation Banquet on 17 July Past District Governor Bev Harrington and Awards Chair DGN Dave Duskin, announced the “Best of the District” awards, recognizing Clubs for achievements during the 2021-2022 Rotary Year. Except for the membership awards which were based on end of the year numbers provided by Rotary International, to be eligible for an award a nomination was necessary.
