Polio & Purple Pinkie

On Tuesday, October 24, in recognition of World Polio Day, Rotary clubs in District 6650 are hosting a fundraising event for End Polio Now. For every $20 donated, you will receive a dozen Purple Pinkie Donuts - a glazed donut stick, topped with a dab of purple icing. Each box provides vaccines to help eradicate polio.
In countries where the threat of polio remains high, every child under five years receives polio vaccine by mouth twice a year during the events called “National Immunization Days. ”When vaccinating millions of children in a very short period of time it is
impossible to document which child has received the vaccine, so every child vaccinated has the little finger (pinkie) nail of their left hand painted with an indelible purple marker.
How Can You Help to End Polio Now?
PREORDER your boxes of Purple Pinkie Donuts:
EMAIL ORDER to rotarydistrict6650.0rg
For every $20 donation, you will receive a dozen purple pinkie donuts and many children will be vaccinated

RI Foundation Month

RI Foundation

November is RI Foundation Month...
Our Rotary Foundation dollars are at work making meaningful change  Thank Sieglinde and fellow Rotarians across the globe.

Paul Harris Challenge and Foundation Month in November
  • District 6650 will continue with the PHF Challenge again this year.

  • The District will continue the “Double Your Donation” option, where Foundation Points can be given to another Rotarian. Last year this was very popular, and we saw 40% of the approximately 800 donors take advantage of this option.

  • Rotarians will receive specific information regarding their current donation status.  Many of our members do not know how much they have given, or how close to the PHF they are.  We hope this information is an added incentive to grow our PHF membership.

District 6650 Art Auction

From District Governor Scott R. Schulick
The Rotary Foundation Art Auction will be held on Friday, February 1, 2019 at the SOAP Gallery in Youngstown, OH.  We're looking for Rotarians who may be artists using any media to participate in the event buy donating a piece of their original art which will be auctioned off to those attending the event.  We think this will be fun and a great way to "BE THE INSPIRATION!"
We will also be host to two very special guests:  Mary Beth Growney Selene, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Rotary Foundation, and Stephanie Urchick, Director-Elect of Rotary International.  This will be an opportunity for you to meet some of our global Rotary leaders!
I hope that each of you and members from your club will attend the event.  Tickets are $35 each or $60 per couple.  Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served.
For those traveling to Youngstown, you might also consider attending the inaugural Groundhog Day Beer fest which will be hosted by my home club on Saturday, February 2 at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.  Overnight accommodations will be available at the Doubletree Downtown Youngstown and I will let you know when a room block has been secured.

Words from our President

From our President...
As this will conclude my remarks for this Rotary year, I want to thank all who have helped in making it a successful one. We have accomplished much. A solid foundation is in place for incoming President Ben Wheeler and the Board to sustain our on-going local projects and to plan additional new ones. The Club can also take pride in their support this year in supporting District efforts for veterans in the Solid Rock and Clearview HOPE initiatives, in additional the Rotary Foundation donations this year have increased to nearly 100% of our membership.
The Rotary Club of North Canton has worked to "Light Up Rotary" in our community, District 6650, and even the world through our international efforts. As this new Rotary year begins, let's "Be a Gift to the World."

Nepal Earthquake Relief

The aftermath of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake has left the people of Nepal mourning, hurting, and in dire need of The official death toll in Nepal has eclipsed 5,200. This sad accounting is expected to go much higher as emergency workers begin reaching remote communities. The United Nations reports early estimates of 1.4 million survivors in need of emergency food assistance.
Rotary District 6650, under the leadership of District Governor Phil Mariola, is determined to lend a hand to Nepal. Please consider a financial contribution to support emergency relief efforts in Nepal. Rotary District 6650 is immediately partnering with the effective and commendable agency Shelter Box (www.shelterbox.org; Article on ShelterBox relationship with Rotary) to get needed supplies and shelter where it is most needed. As the need in Nepal is fluid, representatives of Rotary District 6650 continue to seek additional agencies with which to partner for other serious needs such as clean water, food, blankets, and more. So long as Rotarian support of Nepal relief continues, Rotary District 6650 will wire funds to the agencies we trust will perform the greatest good.
The Salem Rotary Foundation in Rotary District 6650 has offered to act as the central collection and transfer point for Nepal relief contributions.

Words from our District Governor

story thumbnail
District Governor Phil Mariola spoke to our members on August 14th. Increasing and keeping members is his main focus for the year. A few clubs are experiencing membership woes and he has asked our club to assist the Lake Township club. Reaching out through social media is also on his to-do list. The district received $36,000 in grant monies for use in the district and for club projects through monies donated by  members to the RI foundation 3 years ago..
District projects include Operation Warm Coats, supporting Families of the Fallen, and the Central American Outreach (CAMP) project. We received a box to collect old cell phones to support this project.
International projects are of course Polio eradication and Serving Women in Ghana (SWG), a healthcare initiative. (www.servingwomenghana.org)
The following are upcoming District 6650 meetings and events:
09/26 Rotary & Social Media, Foltz Center
10/18 Rotary Leadership institute, Foltz Center
10/15 Western District Celebration, Canton Club
4/24-25 District Conference, Wooster

District 6650 Grant

Our club received a grant from District 6650...These funds will be used for a literacy program at Faith United Methodist Church.
Camp-Read-A-Lot is a summer literacy  program for kids entering grades K-3. Students participate in fun activities designed to keep their reading skills sharp.  They read great stories and receive books to take home and keep for their own. Dramatic play, games, art, and service projects provide opportunities for the children to build their vocabularies and expand their comprehension. They also work on sight words, fluency, letters, and sounds. The program is free and is led by teachers and trained literacy volunteers. 63.1% of public school eighth graders and 66.3% of public school fourth graders in the state of Ohio are unable to read at grade level. 20% of students in North Canton City Schools qualify for free and reduced lunches t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the 8th grade level.

Doing Good - The Rotary Foundation - Remember to give to the Foundation every year...

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.

Darrell Wright, Foundation Chair, is asking all members to give $100.00 every club year.

World Polio Day

story thumbnail

END POLIO NOW

October 24th is World Polio Day

Polio. Poliomyelitis (polio) is a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five.

Polio Today. Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Fewer than 250 polio cases were reported worldwide in 2012, which is a 99% reduction since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. If we don't stay the course, experts say polio could rebound to 10 million cases in the next 40 years.

Challenges. The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.

Ensuring Success. Additional funding will help to end polio now. Thanks to a new campaign, every dollar donated to Rotary will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding.

PolioPlus. Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication, in 1985. Since then, Rotary and its partners have helped reduce the number of annual cases from 350,000 to fewer than 250 and remain committed until every child is safe from the disease. Rotary has contributed more than US$1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $9 billion to the effort.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership including Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.

Rotary in Action. More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-byside with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with partners like UNICEF to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to share the message with those isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

‘This Close’ Campaign. Rotary has a growing roster of public figures and celebrities participating in the "’This Close’ to ending polio" public awareness campaign, including Bill Gates, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Archie Panjabi, Jackie Chan, Jack Nicklaus and Psy. These ambassadors help educate the public about polio through public service announcements, social media and public appearances.
