Winter is over and our Forest Maintenance Group is back in action.  They report our forest looks great and are busy planning the replacement of trees that did not survive the winter.  Photos courtesy of Pascal
Today (March 13th) President Batool presented District Governor Elect Teresa Whitmore with her 5th Paul Harris pin!  Teresa was recognized for her long time service in Rotary.  We are proud to have Teresa part of our Club.  Teresa - you rock!
Today Speaker Barbara Carey, a Social Services Consultant and an advocate for Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Response at the Salvation Army, gave us an informative presentation.  We started with a discussion about the nature of human trafficking, then were shown examples of cases within Canada, supplied with statistics and learned about workshops for youth and adults and ways to advocate for those being trafficked.  We were encouraged to learn more about the Bill going through Parliament right now.  Barbara and her husband David (President, Passport Club) were part of the group photo at the end of the meeting.  They drove two hours to be here with us this morning, bravo to both of them!  Thanks so much.
President Batool inducted our newest member Wolfgang Gerber at our last meeting, Membership Chair Jane assisted. Welcome Wolfgang, who has already jumped in to be part of the Club's Environmental group.
Thanks to our members, funding for 3 shelters and supplies is now available for desperate families in disaster areas.  So far we have funded $ 1500 ($ 1300 online plus some offline donations) to ShelterBox Canada.  Each shelter costs $ 500.  Donations can still be made to help needy families by accessing the following link, and tax receipts will be provided for those donations:

One of our newest members Elide “Eli” Vazquez-Haskett shared her interesting and adventurous life with us. She grew up in Merida, Mexico, the Capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, the middle child in her family. She explored interests such as ballet and tap dancing, guitar, and English. Graduating as an architect, she started her own business working with her brother.  She also joined Rotoract, enjoying volunteering and working in the local community.  She also studied in Florence Italy, where she connected with the local Rotoract club, making new friends. Back in Merida, she joined a new Rotary Club. She took the opportunity to work in Simcoe in 2001 designing a project in Mexico. There she met her future husband Jason, with whom she had a long distance romance, ultimately being married in Mexico. Her husband’s work centered around the First Nations community. In 2006 they moved to Fort St John, BC. In 2008 they moved to Simcoe where their daughter was born, then in 2012 they moved to Ottawa for Jason’s job. At first a stay-at-home mom, Eli then looked for work in her field, but had challenges due to the different building codes which she had to learn. Ultimately after several non-architectural jobs and taking courses to learn building codes and local construction, she found work with EQ Homes, and now manages an area focusing on preparing drawings, and permits plus some new designs. Also, she now has found the time to be able to participate in Rotary and is happy to have found a new home with us! Welcome Eli!
