Mar. 01, 2023 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Dominica Pradere of the Rotary Club of Montego Bay, Jamaica, will speak to us about the HANWASH Program.
HANWASH stands for Haiti National Clean Water Sanitation and Health Strategy. Haiti is one of 10 countries in District 7020 (Central and North East Caribbean, comprising both French and English-speaking territories and countries). HANWASH is the largest project ever initiated by this district. The lack of coordinated, sustainable, safe water and sanitation is one of the greatest challenges in Haiti. Almost half the population depends on untreated water from rivers or lakes, leading to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and dysentery. NGOs and charities have provided pumps and wells over the years, but not in a coordinated or sustainable fashion and without local input. Many have fallen into disrepair. In 2017 the leadership of D7020 had discussions with RI, the Rotary Foundation and the WASH Rotary Action Group which led to the establishment of HANWASH and the signing of a resolution between Rotary and DINEPA (the Haitian government water agency) in 2018. HANWASH also partners with a number of donor agencies, the RAGWASH and the Rotary Foundation. Pilot projects have begun in 4 communities and the goal is to provide access to treated water to the whole population by 2030. This is a long-term program, not a project, and education and maintenance are key to its sustainability and success. Every well or other HANWASH initiative is monitored by a Haitian Club and local community leaders are involved in discussions and planning so as to ensure buy-in by local stakeholders. So far, several Global Grants have provided funding but more funds are needed. For administration and legal expenses. Rotarians are asked to donate towards these additional costs, to “adopt” a well or to support Global Grants.
