The Rotary Club of Yellowknife is looking for an individual to travel and experience the world. A mandatory information event for potential Rotary Exchange Students and their parents is being held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, November 7th at Yellowknife Public Library.
Interested candidates must attend this event, and will be able to bring their questions as well as to hear from past exchange students, their parents, and the selection committee. This program is open to youth who are born on or after February 28, 1994. The minimum age for participation is fifteen years old.

"The Rotary Student Exchange Program is one of the world's most respected exchange programs. Every year around 8000 students spend a year – usually the entire school year – abroad. It's truly an opportunity of a lifetime," said Dane Mason, a Rotarian on the outbound committee. The screening process looks for students that fit the criteria of a person who will live abroad for a year. Openness to ideas, maturity, experience traveling, past experience in the community, family cooperation and more are all taken into account. The chosen student's name is submitted to the Rotary District office which then determines the host country they will reside in.

The successful student will leave in late August, 2011. During the school year the student lives with Rotarians and their families. They will represent Canada as ambassadors to their host country. They attend Rotary functions and of course spend the year in school. Experiences include new friendships, new languages, fun and a steep maturing curve!

While the club sends students away, in turn they also welcome an "inbound" exchange student. They usually live with 2 – 4 different Rotary families through the year, enabling them to experience different family dynamics. The inbound student will be invited to attend many Rotary events and of course school events. He or she will be an ambassador for their home country wherever they go.
