If you can give an hour a week to help, please e-mail Susan Huvenaars: shuvenaars@mail.ycs.nt.ca
The Rotary Kids Ahead Program - snacks and reading, from my experience in selling Rotary Radio ads, is undoubtedly the community service program for which Yellowknife Rotarians are best known. We have been most fortunate to have Union of Northern Workers financial and staff support, and the Co-op joining with us to provide a snack program at Mildred Hall and Weledeh. There are also a number of non Rotarian readers who help us out. Susan Huvenaars has advised that we need twelve more readers for this year. Literacy is the key skill needed in modern society and by being a Rotary reader you give a young person a greater chance of success and also develop a new young friend. Literacy is a major focus for both our Club and Rotary International, and one which members identified as a priority during our strategic planning session. Many of our Rotary Readers are really busy business and government people. The key advantage of the reading program is that you can go morning /afternoon, any day of the week. With travel time included, it is less than an hour. Employers are often willing to give employees time off for worthwhile community volunteer work. If you travel, consider asking your spouse/significant other or another Rotarian to help out while you are away. It would be great if we could have a Rotarian reader for each of the students. If you can help out, please e-mail Susan Huvenaars: shuvenaars@mail.ycs.nt.ca: and let her know that you would like to be a Rotary Reader. Thanks for the consideration, John Argue, Chair, Community Services PS. This also counts as an attendance make -up.
