On January 4th, Rebecca Mahler, one of our teenagers at St. Patrick's High School came and spoke about her trip to Ottawa for the Adventures in Citizenship program that Rotary offers.

The Rotary Adventure in Citizenship program, now in its 57th consecutive year, was instituted by the Rotary Club of Ottawa in 1951. 220 outstanding senior high school students from across Canada spent four days in the National Capital in a program designed to develop their potential as leaders in their communities and in Canadian society.

The main sponsors involved in this program are: National Capital Commission; RCMP, and; the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Rebecca gave a heartfelt speech to our club outlining what happened in her 4 days in Ottawa and the large number of teenagers she spent time with.  She was very passionate about what she had learned about our government, the services offered within our government, the RCMP musical ride and so forth.

She extremely touched by the number of students that she made friends with and believes there are several she will have friendships with for the rest of her life. After participating in this program, she further believes that there are so many opportunities that await her out there and now she is willing to try what she wants to do, such as being a page during the sitting of legislature.

Rebecca is a glowing example of the potential leadership we have right in our own community. She was an excellent speaker and spoke from her heart. As a Rotarian, I look forward to seeing what Rebecca ventures into with her future and I truly look forward to seeing if she becomes a Rotarian during her lifetime.

The Yellowknife Rotary Club wishes Rebecca well and we were glad to be of service to her for the Adventures in Citizenship Program. Good luck Rebecca!!
