Last Weeks program was provided by Rotarian Jana Butler. Jana presented the most recent Noon Rotary Club, Plant City High School, scholarship recipients. Plant City High School College and Career Counselor, Jamie Stevens, thanked the club for our generous scholarship giving to very worthy students. Our club gave $18,000 to Plant City High School students. Our club is also giving $5,000 to Simmons students and, for the first time, the club is offering $10,000 to past scholarship recipients for a second year. The Noon Plant City Rotary club is the biggest “giver” in Plant City! The “push” is for students to look at college and trade schools for further education. These scholarships will make an impact for both those wishing to go to college and those who would like to go to trade schools. A great Rotary committee put in a lot of time and effort to select worthy recipients. Thank you to the committee, led by Jana Butler, consisting of; Billy Keel, Kayla Drawdy, Nick Thurston, Martyn Clay, Tai Isha Robinson, James Boyd and Brian Griffin. The scholarship recipients were; Charles Reid Schmidt (Shorty Brown Scholarship), Michael Coton (Doug Gibbs Scholarship), Anna Grace Futch, Ashton Mincey, Colton Miller, Davis Clay Adams, Delany Flowers, Gizelle Carrasco-Martinez, Katelyn Yarbrough, Kendell Gaudens, Laura Treshe, Lily Batley, Madelyn Conrad, Mason Ness, Miguel Angel Gomez Martinez, Rachel Stevens and Reagan Brown. Not all heroes are Rotarians, but all Rotarians are heroes. Not necessarily through the eyes of their friends and neighbors, and certainly not through their own. But there’s no question members of the Lake Wales and their partnering clubs are heroes in the eyes of the young girls who no longer live in fear of the Honduran gangs that once enslaved them. So, too, the
members of the New Tampa Noon club are heroes in the eyes of those in India who are reaping the benefits of their global project. And there’s no doubt those whose lives have been saved through the record breaking Gift of Life program regard as super-heroes the members of the Ybor and partnering clubs who have helped give them life. These are but a few examples with many other clubs engaged in similar efforts.
Closer to home, four Polytech students lost everything when a fire swept through their apartment, yet they’ve been able to continue their studies because of the generosity of Rotarians. Through those students’ eyes, members of the Winter Haven club are heroes for
enabling them to pursue their dreams. There currently are over 1700 hundred Rotarians along with 42 Rotary and Rotaract clubs in our district, and each of you is a hero to those whose lives you have touched.
If you are able, I hope on May 24th and 25thyou will join us at the District Conference to celebrate our continuing successes, as well as to recognize you and your fellow Rotarians whose time, effort, and generosity have made it all possible.
