Last week’s program was provided by Rotarian Nate Kilton.  Nate’s guest speaker was Jerilyn Rumbarger, Executive Director of Plant City Main Street. 

     Nate Kilton started the meeting with a quick update on the progress of the Midtown development.  The Developer has turned in the first plan and proposal to the commission.  The commission will review and make a decision at the next commission meeting.  This is the farthest we have been with this process and it looks promising. 

     Nate went on to thank the Rotarians that have a part to play in this as board members of the Chamber of Commerce, The EDC and Main Street.  A healthy Plant City downtown positively affects economic growth and civic pride.  Historically, downtown was the heart of the community.  It embodies the true heritage of community life. 

     The Main Street approach grew out of recognition that a community is only as strong as its core.  Plant City Main Street was formed to play an active role in revitalizing our downtown.  It is focused on retaining the real sense of community that downtown provides through preservation, economic development and community revitalization. Many people and groups benefit from a vibrant downtown:

     1.  Residents enjoy increased shopping options and more employment opportunities.

     2.  Merchants have a greater opportunity for sales growth and expansion and an expanded customer base.

     3.  Property Owners have increased occupancy rates, rents and increased property values.

     4.  Financial Institutions benefit through expanded business and residential customer base with an improved public image and goodwill.

     5.  Community Partners improve the quality of life in the community resulting in a healthier overall business climate. 

     6.  City and County Government benefit with increased sales and property tax base and the protection of property values and infrastructure investment. 

     7.  Professionals and Service Businesses have a readily available customer base of downtown employees with nearby amenities for clients and staff.

     8.  Corporations and Major Industry find it easier to recruit employees and a prosperous downtown bring additional amenities for employees and clients.
