Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Matt Buzza. Matt’s guest speakers wereMelissa Zornitta – Executive Director, Hillsborough City-County Planning Commission & Mark Hudson, Plant City Liason. The purpose of the Commission is to plan beyond today for a thriving future. The Planning Commisions Mission Statement promotes, coordinates, collaborates with, and facilitates the involvement of all people in the long range planning and vision for our community to improve economic development, quality of life, and provide value-added services. The Vision for the Commission is to be sure that people are confident in the innovative and competent leadership that has contributed to the creation of a thriving, prosperous community that provides opportunity, fairness and choice in how we live, move, learn, work, and play. The Planning Commission was created in 1959 by the Florida Legislature as a local planning agency for all governments in Hillsborough County. Decisions made today can impact the quality of life for the next 10-40 years. In the last five years Hillsborough has increased its population by 66,000 people. By 2040 it is projected that the population in Hillsborough County will increase by over 600,000 residents making long term planning vital to the success of our communities. The Midtown vision and development, the NE Plant City residential communities and other plans are in place to meet the dramatic increase projected for the future. With growth comes opportunities and the Commission’s goals are to be ahead of the growth and to make Plant City, and Hillsborough county, a great place to live, work and play. -submitted by Mike Arndt

In his address to convention attendees on Tuesday, 31 May, Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith proclaimed that The Rotary Foundation has never been stronger than it is today.

This year's World Water Summit on 27 May in Seoul highlighted the progress being made:
Over the last 25 years, more than 2.5 billion people gained access to improved drinking water, and 2 billion who didn't have adequate sanitation now do.
Child deaths from water-related diseases dropped from 1.5 million to just over 600,000.
The UN Millennium Development Goals' target for clean drinking water was met five years ahead of schedule.
