This Week's Meeting- Jan. 4th

Topic: Plant City Police Department

Last Meeting- Dec. 14th

The last meeting program was presented by Rotarian Don Stine. Don’s guest speaker was E.J. Salcines Our speaker last week was retired Judge E.J. Salcines of the District Court of Appeal. He is an honorary Rotarian in the Ybor City Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Award recipient. For over 50 years he has been a lawyer, a federal and state prosecuting attorney, and for the last 15 years was on the District Court of Appeal. He was the elected State Attorney for 16 years here in Hillsborough County. He was Vice President of the National District Attorneys Association and President of the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association who recently awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award for 50 years of exemplary public service. Judge Salcines is a recognized authority on Florida history appearing on radio and television and frequently lecturing on Tampa’s rich Latin history. He is a frequent speaker at programs in our many public libraries. Besides his Bachelor’s degree and his Law degree, he has two Honorary Doctorate degrees. He is a former Trustee of the Tampa Bay History Center and was Vice President of the Tampa Historical Society. Some years ago, he was knighted by King Juan Carlos of Spain into the Royal Order of Queen Isabella. His presentation last week concerns the judges and lawyers who really made a difference in developing Plant City and Hillsborough County and he presented a pictorial history of our early judiciary. From Peter O. Knight, the Sparkman’s, Joseph Wall, Milton Mabry, and Hugh MacFarlane there is a rich history in the Tampa area of Lawyers and Judges that helped develop Tampa and make it great.

Rotary honors six women for leadership and humanitarian service
Rotary President K.R. Ravindran has named six Rotary Global Women of Action for 2015. The honorees were chosen for their dedication and service, which has improved the lives of thousands around the world. “Every day at Rotary I see firsthand how our members work to change lives and make a significant impact,” said Ravindran. “Rotary’s Global Women of Action embody Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.” The women will be honored at Rotary Day at the United Nations in New York City on 7 November. Bringing education to rural Mexican area, one school at a time
When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education.
