Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Greg Buckner. Greg’s guest speaker was Jarrod Peterson, Territory Manager with SAPA Aluminum. Jarrod spoke to us about Aluminum Extrusions and advancements in Aluminum technology. Sapa is shaping a lighter future through a global reach and local presence within extrusions, building systems, and precision tubing. Sapa has 23,500 employees in more than 40 countries, with headquarters located in Oslo, Norway. Jarrod brought several examples and samples of aluminum extrusions and explained the process as to how each are made. Aluminum extrusions are used in almost any type of product you can imagine such as; Automotive parts ( superchargers), truck bodies (Ford F-150), outboard engines, military practice rounds, fishing (“Power Pole”), windows, bleachers, office, transportation and a wide variety of other products. Building and construction are the biggest market for aluminum extrusion. The most common process for extrusion is through an extrusion die. The raw aluminum is basically pressed through a pre made die built to the customer’s specifications. Hydroforming friction is the newest technology that uses friction to heat the aluminum and fuses it to the desired shape. This process uses high pressure that takes the place of the extrusion die. This process is great for use in cruise ships, truck bodies, decks and floors. Aluminum extrusion processing requires a great deal of energy and is mainly processed in areas of low energy costs for power. The Middle East (Oil) and Ireland/Sweden (Hydro power) are major areas for aluminum production. Aluminum is the most abundant element in the earth’s crust but takes a tremendous amount of energy to make. The Auto industry is currently the largest growth area for aluminum and can reduce the weight of a vehicle by more than 20% and is safer because there are no welds to compromise the integrity of the body, etc. -submitted by Mike Arndt
