Last week's program was Dwayne Jones, Director of Field Service for the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Or, more simply described, Dwayne oversees Boy Scout activities for over 17,000 youths in nine counties in western and central Florida.
Dwayne is fellow Rotarian, and provided the interesting historical fact that Rotary was a charter member of the Boy Scout organization in 1910. It is not uncommon for Rotary to partner with the Scouts in local program and activities. Both Rotary and the Boy Scouts have similar missions: To teach and support individuals the qualities of leadership, character, and service.
Locally, Plant City has over 400 youths involved in the various Scout programs, and is growing. Since most Scout activities are held outdoors, such as camping, COVID had limited impact on the organization this year.
