Last Week's Meeting - Oct. 12th

Our last program was provided by Rotarian Arn Shulte. Arn introduced Lynn Archibald, the new owner and manager of the Walden Lake Golf and Country Club. Lynn’s goal is to restore the Club to its “Glory Days”. Lynn didn’t like the way golf was going in the 90’s, he believes that golf should be a “social event” not built around “PGA” golf pro’s. Lynn believes that if you do good things, good things will happen. Poor past management has left the club in a poor condition that will take time to repair. Lynn has high standards and even higher expectations for all aspects of the club. A complete restoration in planned for the course, the pool, the bar and grill, the restaurant, the pool and the building itself. Archibald has started maintenance to the outside of the clubhouse, killing weeds that were allowed to grow in the courtyard. He’s also added an 80-inchTV inside to cater to those wanting to relax and watch sports in the clubhouse. In a couple of years, he would like to tear it down and build a new facility. “There’s other things besides golf you can do here,” Archibald said. “The pool, tennis. We’ve got to get golf back as a social event. I want to change the way people think of golf.” To foster a sense of community, Archibald has gotten rid of the many levels of membership and simplified it to two different types: a golf membership and a social membership. He said having too many levels of membership disjoints the camaraderie of the members. To better reach out to his members and the community, he would like to open his doors for events, such as fundraiser golf tournaments, dinners and more.

New electric golf carts have just arrived to replace the old gas operated carts and a new “redesign” of the Hills course is underway. Archibald believes that every course should have 2 “signature holes” every 9 holes and the theory of 6 easy holes, 6 hard holes and 6 average holes per 18. Lynn also wants the make the club restaurant a “destination” eating establishment to be excited about and wants people to once again be proud to belong to Walden lake Golf and Country Club. Archibald’s mission is to make people happy and to have a good time.

Nigeria sees no wild polio cases for one year
Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
