March 18 email from Doug:
Good afternoon Rotarians,
As I said in the meeting the other day there may be a need in our community that we would be able to help, even in this time of “social distancing.” The United Food Bank of Plant City is in need of our help.
They assumed the responsibility to feed all in need (as they always do) during this pandemic but are struggling to obtain the required provisions to do so. What I am proposing is that we start a food drive and support it much the same as if it were for hurricane relief in the Bahamas. They are in need of select items that you may already have extra of or could find in local stores or even online shopping options. The list of needed things are as follows:
- peanut butter
- bread
- rice
- cereal
- pasta
- breakfast bars
- canned fruits
- canned soups
- canned vegetables
- mac and cheese
- canned tuna
Jarrett Scott Ford is a drop-off point to accept these food items and will deliver them to the Food Bank for us. There will be marked boxes in the front showroom that you can stop in, drop and go without having to have much contact with anyone. You could also drop any donations off directly to the food bank.
My hope is that we will all search our pantries and stores and try to find these much needed items to help. Also I ask you to post on your respective social media platforms that rotary is a club of action, that there is a need to help NOW and what we are in need of to handle those needs.
The Food Bank is also in need of 5-7 people daily from the hours of 8:30-12 to help with tasks such as stocking shelves, sorting, bagging rice, unloading boxes, packing food bags. If anyone would like to donate some time please contact Gayle Tindle at (813)764-0625 ext 5.
This is an extremely important cause right now and is something we can easily impact. Thank you all!
