Last Meeting's Program

Last week's program was presented by Rotarian Shane Karlson and was introduced by John Haney. Shane’s guest speaker was Hillsborough County School Board member, Melissa Snively.

Melissa Snively was elected to the Hillsborough County School Board (District 4) in 2014. She is one of seven members responsible for making policy decisions and overseeing a total budget of $2.9 billion for the 8th largest school district in the nation, which is also the county’s largest employer with more than 26,000 employees. She is a graduate of the University of Florida with a B.A. in English, and a Minor in Secondary Education. She has owned and operated her own business in Lithia since 2001, where she employs eight professionals. She has served on numerous community organizations including: the Junior League of Tampa, the Community Roundtable of Brandon, PTA/PTSA, and the Brandon Outreach Clinic. Melissa has been a BSA Cub Scout volunteer for several years and currently serves on the Timucua District training team, as well as on the Gulf Ridge Council board of directors as an area chairman. She was also the 2011-2012 Chairwoman of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, Small Business of the Year Award recipient, and a finalist for the Outstanding Leader Award Presented by the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce. She is past president of the Tampa Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and serves on the board of directors for the Florida Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors as the Political Action Committee Chair. She and her husband, David, have been married since 1999 and have four children - all of whom attend public school in Hillsborough County. Melissa represents 55 schools in District 4 which covers most of eastern Hillsborough County. Being a board member of the 8th largest school district in the country has its challenges and rewards. The mission of the board is “to provide an education and the supports that enable each student to excel as a successful and responsible citizen”. The vision is “preparing students for life”. Strategic goals include: increasing graduation rates to 90%, building strong culture and relationships, communicating with stakeholders and a foundation of financial stewardship. There are 26,000 school district employee’s making it the largest employer on the west coast of Florida. 215,000 students make up the district with a $3 billion budget. There are 270 public schools and 56 charter schools. Financial challenges with a district this size are the main issue. 86% of the budget is payroll and benefits. Many of the challenges are mandated by the state and federal government. 50% state and 30% federal doesn’t leave much for local control. Value Added Measures (VAM) are used to grade/score the teachers. There are lots of testing to grade teachers that need to be re-evaluated. - provided by Mike Arndt

Dance, Dance, Dance

Dancing with the Local’s committee meetings are starting up! There will be a meeting at South Florida Baptist Hospital at 5:30 pm, Tuesday, June 19th. If you would like to be a part of our second largest fundraising event please talk to Jodi Stevens.

The Plant City Rotary Installation and Awards banquet will be held this Thursday June 21st at 6 p.m. This year's event will be held at Lone Palm Country Club in Lakeland. Hope to see you all there.

Kenneth Whiting

After publishing three historical fiction novels, Felix Haynes is working on his fourth book. This one will be a biography of the man many consider to be the father of U. S. aircraft carriers. Kenneth Whiting was the first man to escape from a downed submarine before he took on the new challenge of flying early, rickety aeroplanes. The last Navy pilot to be trained by Orville Wright, he began pushing for a totally new type of ship--aircraft carriers--in 1916. World War I intervened, and he led the first contingent of Americans to France. After the War, he convinced the Navy to convert a coal ship into the first aircraft carrier. He commissioned the USS Langley and as her executive officer led for two years in developing all the procedures for catapulting and landing airplanes on her deck. The next time you see a carrier, think of Kenneth Whiting. Felix will be traveling I-95 this summer to complete his research on the book.
