Last Week's Meeting- March 14th

Last week’s program was provided by Rotarian Bill Wilmeth. Bill’s guest speaker was Torrey Chambliss, Tampa Port Authority Communications Director. Torrey spoke to us about the Tampa Port, Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) and its influence on our community and plans for growth. There are 15 Seaports in Florida that are continually ranked as the nation’s top ports. Tampa is Florida’s largest port in terms of tonnage and area. Each $1 invested in the port results in $6.90 coming back into the community. The port has recently undergone a “rebranding” to “Port Tampa Bay” in order to better relate to the 70+ million customers it serves in its geographical influence area. Commercial Port activities began in Tampa in the mid 1800’s with major trade in Cuba. Port Tampa Bay is also a major shipyard repair port. It is estimated that 80,000+ jobs can be related to the port. The strengths of Port Tampa Bay are its operational diversity, the abundance of land, its strategic location and its proximity to international locations. The ports operational diversity includes the ability to load and ship many different products. Bulk (liquid), Break Bulk, RoR0 (cars/trucks), containers, etc. Major products include; petroleum, ammonia, liquid sulfur, steel, forest products and anything containerized. Currently there are 4 cruise companies operating out of the port; Carnival, Norwegian, Holland America and Royal Caribbean. The port has expansion plans to include a plan for Channelside Park and other land development to include rail terminal for the I-4 connector, container terminal being expanded, including “on dock cold storage” along with Foreign Trade Zone abilities. The Port has long-term plans for our area’s growing needs. -submitted by Mike Arndt

South Florida Baptist Hospital Donation
Last Week Rotary President Jeremy Burris presented Karen Kerr and Jana Butler with a check from our club for $25,000 for the Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation. The donation will help to equip the Charles and Betty Grimes Critical Care Center which will open in April.

Institute equips regional leaders to advance Rotary’s story

UNESCO-IHE scholarship applications now available
The Rotary Foundation and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education are offering up to 10 scholarships for graduate study at UNESCO-IHE's Delft campus in the Netherlands. The aim is to increase the number of trained professionals who can devise, plan, and implement water and sanitation solutions in developing areas. Successful women mentor youth through Rotary
When Clara Montanez was a student, she never heard the word mentoring. The idea of having a role model help you pursue your ambitions was unfamiliar to her.
