Last Meeting - June 29th

Our last program was a club Assembly led by our new President, Jeremy Burris. Jeremy spoke about his vision for the new year and congratulated the previous administration and past President, Brian Griffin on a great year! There were a lot of great accomplishments last year including; Alvin Futch and Billy Herold presenting the book “60 Years of Rotary”…a history of our club, the Wild Game Cook-out that grossed over $113,000 and Dancing with the Locals together netting over $88,000. Our club also “gifted” over $58,000 last year and more than $34,000 so far this year to charities and deserving organizations in our community. For the new year we have some challenges and goals: Retaining membership is key. They way to do that is to ensure that members remain active. We have a great, diverse club membership with many different ages and different skill sets that can do great things. We would also like to grow the club. Utilizing our website and social media can make a great difference in letting people know that we are active and are making an impact on our community. Jeremy would like to implement more social events for our members…pool party, golf tournament, Top-Golf, family spring event, etc. If you have ideas for social events please let Jeremy know! More community projects are coming…these are great opportunities for us to be a part of the community and make a difference for others. Improving “press” relations…we are not getting enough “press” for the things that we do. Also, with more social media/press presence we can encourage people that have a specific need, or know of someone who has a need, to contact us for help. Jeremy would also like to see more “meaningful” speakers that can add value to our club and to each member. Each member is responsible for a speaker approximately every 1 ½ years…please take the time to get a great speaker. Looking forward to another great and active Rotary year!

Plant City Rotary Foundation Meeting

July 20, 2015, will be the annual meeting of the Plant City Rotary Foundation. As all Rotary members are also members of the Rotary Foundation, your attendance at this meeting is important. This meeting will be part of our regular weekly meeting.

Illiteracy traps adults, and their families, in poverty
Around the world, millions of adults are unable to read or write, and therefore struggle to earn a living for themselves and their families. Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy. In Detroit, Michigan, a widely cited 2003 survey conducted by the National Institute for Literacy found that almost half of residents over age 16 were functionally illiterate -- unable to use reading, speaking, writing, and computer skills in everyday life....
