Last Meeting- Aug. 29th
Our last program was presented by Rotarian Charles Harris. Charles guest speaker was, 2016 Citizen of the Year, Sharon Moody. Ms. Moody spoke to us about the success of the recent “Lots of Hugs” summer reading camp. Our club donated to this cause and she gave the club an overview of what happened June 13 – August 3, 2016. Statistics point to the disappointing loss of learning that children face during the summer months when no structured programs take place in their lives. This summer was very eventful with campers being engaged in the following activities: Ages 5-7 worked with visual and auditory discrimination, vowel consonants, consonant blends, word families, rhyming words, daily reading strategies, shared, guided and independent reading comprehension. Ages 8-9 learned character development, vocabulary, sentence structure, setting, cause and effect, prediction, context clues, summaries, problem and solution, and independent reading. Ages 10-12 also learned about current events, effective writing, topic sentences, supporting details, word choice/vocabulary, point of view, figurative language and public speaking. The program received 95 registered members…80 African Americans, 10 Hispanics and 5 white students. The instructional staff is employed by Hillsborough County School System. There were 35 students in the age 10-12 group, 25 students in the age 8-9 group and 35 students in the ages 5-7 group. On average, 85 students attended camp every day. In addition to the “learning” there was “team building” activities and field trips and guest speakers. Healthy meals were served each day…breakfast, hot lunch and an afternoon snack…10,532 meals were served. 2,645 hours were worked for this program including 416 student volunteer hours and 114 parent volunteer hours. Many community members and leaders also gave of their time and talents to this program. The program has grown each year it has been in existence and is definitely making an impact in our community.

School Project Ideas Billy Herold is looking to the club members for any ideas they may have for a “School Project” beside the Dictionary Project. Apparently the Dictionary Project is not as well received as it was in the past due to “technology” changes. If you have any suggestions as to how our club can be involved and support our schools, let Billy know!
Board Opening Michael Watkins is leaving the club for employment reasons and has vacated his Board member position. Nominations for his position are being taken. It is for the remainder of a one year term.

The Rotary Foundation has received the highest possible score from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
In the most recent ratings, released on 1 September, The Rotary Foundation earned the maximum 100 points for both financial health and accountability and transparency.
The ratings reflect how efficiently Charity Navigator believes the Foundation will use donations, how well it has sustained programs and services, and its level of commitment to good governance and openness.
In the previous rating, the Foundation had received 97 points.

Rotary clubs of District 6200 are collecting relief funds to help thousands of victims after record flooding devastated communities in southern Louisiana, USA, earlier this month. Torrential rains caused rivers, streams, and bayous to swell, damaging or destroying more than 60,000 homes and killing at least 13 people.
The U.S. Coast Guard and emergency responders helped rescue more than 30,000 residents from the rising flood waters. As of 25 August, more than 3,000 residents were still in emergency shelters even after the water receded.

Legendary singer and polio survivor Donovan Leitch, better known simply as Donovan, has joined Rotary in its fight to eradicate the paralyzing disease that afflicted him during much of his childhood.
Donovan contracted polio at age three in Glasgow, Scotland. The disease weakened his right leg and left it thinner and shorter than the other. Confined to his bed for much of his childhood, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer said his father would read him poetry.
