Last Meeting - July 13th

Our last program was presented by Rotarian Jamey Moody. Jamey’s guest speaker was Lara Shane with AMI Kids. AMI Kida believes that there is potential born into every child and even troubled ones have the potential to become great people. For more than 45 years, AMIkids has empowered over 122,000 kids across the country to discover the potential within them to transform their lives and send them on the road to success. In 1969, Judge Frank Orlando, Chief Juvenile Court Judge in Fort Lauderdale, was frustrated at seeing the same young men come before his court time and again. His only option at the time was to send them to what was then called reform school where they would stay for a time then end up right back in front of him in court. He knew from his own experiences as a camp counselor and teacher that, for these boys to turn their lives around, they would need more than to be simply locked away. Over 45 years later, the experiment begun by two men to help kids has evolved into a national, non-profit leader in providing kids with a troubled past the guidance and support they need to discover their potential, strengthen their community, and make a lasting impact on generations to come. AMIkids’ unique combination of education, behavior modification, and treatment in a family atmosphere with caring staff help children with a troubled past turn their lives around to become productive citizens. AMIkids staff and board members work together to put kids first and make their communities safer by positively impacting as many youth as possible. The Misson of AMIkids is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth develop into responsible and productive citizens. AMIkids' mission is to protect public safety and positively impact as many youth as possible through the efforts of a diverse and innovative staff. AMIkids works in partnership with youth agencies, local communities and families. Their vision is to separate a troubled past from a bright future. As part of their dedication to financial responsibility and putting kids first, the vast majority of their budget goes directly to program expenses. Australian students take opportunity by the horns
The rules of the Shaftesbury Rodeo Academy are simple: no school, no rodeo. It’s a message that teenagers who attend school at Bisley Farm, most of whom have never attended any school regularly, take seriously. Illiteracy traps adults, and their families, in poverty
Around the world, millions of adults are unable to read or write, and therefore struggle to earn a living for themselves and their families. Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy. In Detroit, Michigan, a widely cited 2003 survey conducted by the National Institute for Literacy found that almost half of residents over age 16 were functionally illiterate -- unable to use reading, speaking, writing, and computer skills in everyday life....

Early cancer detection is saving lives in Sri Lanka
More than 20,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in Sri Lanka, and many of them prove fatal. The Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka, set out 10 years ago to save some of those lives by establishing the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre. In partnership with the National Cancer Control Programme and the Ministry of Health, the center in Colombo has screened more than 35,000 patients, mostly low-income, and detected more than 7,500 cases of abnormalities that required further investigation.
