Last Week's Meeting - Oct. 5th

Our last program was provided by Rotarian Tim Shuff. Tim’s guest speaker was Ron Bushaw. Ron spoke to us about American Muscle Cars and the roaring 60’s. The race for power and speed in cars began in the late 1950’s. Car people started building and modifying their own cars for power and speed. Street racing was the popular “unauthorized” sport in the country and people raced for nothing more than “bragging” rights. New cars in the 60’s were like the current “I-phone’s” are today. People talked about them and lined up each year to see the new models with great anticipation. In the mid 50’s the big 3 automakers, Mopar, Ford and GM, started to try and meet the general populations needs for muscle cars. They were not very good at it! In 1962 the Impala was unveiled which finally started the ball rolling with muscle. In 1964 John Delorean put a “tri-power” engine in a Ford Tempest which became the first GTO. 1964 – 1974 is considered the “Muscle Car era”. The fuel embargo in 1974 basically put an end to the muscle cars as people never cared about gas mileage before. The average muscle car ran at about 13 MPG, were V8 engines, and with gas at .35/gallon it was hard to afford. The GTO, Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Barracuda, Challenger, Charger and Grand Torino were just a few of the most popular models. The competition between the auto manufacture’s to produce the best looking car was fierce…anticipation for the new cars was great! The #1 car produced was the Chevelle (4,200,000) and #2 was the Mustang (2,850,000).

Bringing education to rural Mexican area, one school at a time
When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. Nigeria sees no wild polio cases for one year
Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano.
