This Week's Meeting- Jan. 11th

Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian James Surrency. James’ guest speaker was Plant City Police Department Chief of Police, Ed Duncan. The Plant City Police Department maintains order and improves the quality of life for our citizens. They are a full service law enforcement agency with a staff of personnel whom are sworn law enforcement officers. The Mission Statement of the PCPD is: “In partnership with the community, and while affording dignity and respect to all persons, our mission is to maintain order, improve the quality of life of our citizens, and develop our members to their greatest potential”. The Plant City Police Department is led by Chief of Police, Edward Duncan. It is comprised of 3 divisions including: Information Services Division, Investigative Services Division and Uniform Patrol Division. Each division is headed by a captain and contains several units. Among Chief Duncan’s many accomplishments, during his 34 year career with the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office, Duncan served as an active SWAT team member, Criminal Investigations Division Deputy Commander, served as Commander of the Homeland Security Division and coordinated the activity of 2,700 security personnel for the Republican National Convention held in Tampa in 2012.

He earned the rank of colonel, a position afforded to only four people within the roughly 2000 sworn officers at the Sheriff’s Office. The PCPD is now fully staffed with 67 Officers that are invested in our community. Ed feels confident that the stringent recruitment and hiring process has yielded top of the line Officers. The PCPD has a great working relationship with the other law enforcement offices in the area that is invaluable in many cases. Last year PCPD had 2,600 911 calls, a 40% increase over the previous year. 2,400 calls to service were responded to. Violent crime is down and their crime clearance rate is very good. Vehicle burglaries are up 70% in Plant City. These are not break-ins but rather burglaries from vehicles that are not locked. Be sure to “lock” your vehicles in parking lots and in your driveways. Ed also spoke on legislative issues surrounding firearms, gun control, terrorism and training, drug/gang task forces and body cameras. Ed that the Police relationship with the community is key for a community’s success and safety.

Program Chairman Needed!
Last week President Jeremy announced that our club has an immediate opening for our program chairman. As a reminder, the program chairman coordinates our weekly programs but is not responsible for lining up the speakers. It is the responsibility of the individual Rotarians to line up the speakers. The program chairman is responsible for communicating with club members about their upcoming scheduled meetings, as well as notifying Mike Arndt and Bill Wicker in advance so the speakers can be published in the printed bulletin and this weekly electronic bulletin. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to step up and help our club. If you have any other questions about this position please contact President Jeremy.

Rotary Valentine's Meeting

Monday Feb. 8th is Bring Your Spouse (or significant other) to Rotary In celebration the upcoming Valentine's Day. Nick Hall is scheduled to be our speaker and will will be giving a presentation about his cross county bicycle trip raising money for Polio Plus. Nick is an interesting individual and it should be an entertaining program. Who know's there may some other surprises that day too!
