This Week's Meeting- Jan. 25th

Last Meeting- Jan. 18th

Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Beau Walden. Pam Walden, District 6 Hillsborough County Schools Supervisor for Agricultural and JROTC programs, was introduced by Jon Poppell. Pam was and elementary teach for 20 years and then moved into the middle school. In June of 2007 she became the Ag supervisor in charge of all the agribusiness programs in the Hillsborough County School district. In December 2007 she became supervisor for diversified career programs and in June 2008 JROTC programs was added to her responsibilities. Nineteen of twenty seven high schools in the district currently have Ag programs plus 1 career center and 1 adult center employing 36 teachers. There are also 2 exceptional student centers with 2 teachers and one youth services center (incarcerated youths) with 1 teacher and 16 middle schools with 21 teachers. The FFA program is very strong with Hillsborough County a leader in state and national Ag/FFA curricular development. The district now has 8 industry certifications for students to earn and is the first district to implement High School credit for courses in middle school. Over the past five years students have earned over 300 certifications bringing in approximately $450,000 to the Ag program for supplies and program expenses. Hillsborough County has 27 traditional High Schools and 1 Career Center that all have JROTC programs. There are 11 Army JROTC, 9 Navy JROTC, 7 Air Force JROTC and 1 Marine JROTC programs. All instructors are retired military with the respective branch paying half their salary and the school district paying half. The National Defense Act of 1916 established JROTC and was a recruitment tool for the military. It is not for “recruitment” today, the goal is to teach leadership, however, it does give a “bump” in pay if they do decide to go into the military after graduation. All units compete in local, state and national levels in; Rifle teams, Drill teams, Raider teams, Color Guard and academic competitions. The Drill teams and Color Guard are available to perform at events. For more information on JROTC contact Pam Walden.

Program Chairman Needed!
Last week President Jeremy announced that our club has an immediate opening for our program chairman. As a reminder, the program chairman coordinates our weekly programs but is not responsible for lining up the speakers. It is the responsibility of the individual Rotarians to line up the speakers. The program chairman is responsible for communicating with club members about their upcoming scheduled meetings, as well as notifying Mike Arndt and Bill Wicker in advance so the speakers can be published in the printed bulletin and this weekly electronic bulletin. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to step up and help our club. If you have any other questions about this position please contact President Jeremy.

Rotary Social

On Friday, January 29th we will be having our next Rotary Social at the home of Rotarian Bob Roderick at 823 N. Wilder Road in Plant City. The social will begin around 6:30pm and will include a bonfire, burgers, hotdogs, chicken and all the sides. Get ready for a night of Rotary fellowship fireside. Rotarians, spouses or significant others and perspective Rotarians are welcome to join in on this great event. BYOB. There will be more updates as we get closer to the 29th.

Rotary Valentine's Meeting

Monday Feb. 8th is Bring Your Spouse (or significant other) to Rotary In celebration the upcoming Valentine's Day. Nick Hall is scheduled to be our speaker and will will be giving a presentation about his cross county bicycle trip raising money for Polio Plus. Nick is an interesting individual and it should be an entertaining program. Who know's there may some other surprises that day too!

Michele Berg named deputy general secretary
