Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Jim Scott.  Jim’s guest speaker was Lindsay Milbourne, Fox 13 Meteorologist.  Lindsay Milbourne is the meteorologist for Good Day Tampa Bay's weekend editions. She joined FOX 13 in January 2012.  Lindsay hosts the FOX 13 Pet of the Week segment every Sunday with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. They matched her with her rescue mini-poodle terrier mix Sofie. You can also watch Lindsay’s eco-friendly Earth Watch stories on Saturday mornings. While growing up in Chicago, Lindsay was always been interested in meteorology. She has a meteorology degree and a minor in math from Florida State University, and has been awarded the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society.  Weather plays a role in everyone’s life, everyday.  It is the job of the Meteorologist to help everyone navigate their daily activities.  Technology is a large part of the meteorologist job, inputing and analyzing weather patterns to forecast the future weather.  Computer models help make the forecasts on a daily, even hourly basis.  Skytower radar gives updates every minute for analysis.  The Radar gives so much information such as; wind direction, wind speeds, humidity levels, rotation of clouds, etc.  The Weather set on Fox 13 includes computers and the “chromo key” (green wall) that is a bit tricky and takes some practice to get used to!  There are 4 robotic cameras and a lot of behind the scenes work that is done in order to put on a weather broadcast that last 3 – 3 ½ minutes.  A lot can happen during a live broadcast and the reporter must be able to be flexible and adjust to everything that can go wrong.  Lindsay also discussed the importance of hurricane preparedness, storm surge, tornadoes and inland flooding which are all potential weather disasters waiting to happen.  It is imperative that the meteorologists are prepared and accurate to help citizens in the event of severe weather.   -submitted by Mike Arndt
