Last Meeting's Program

Last week’s program was presented by Tim Kip. Tim’s guest speaker was Ed Verner. Ed gave us a 20 year retrospective of the history of Plant City. Ed Verner wears many different hats; Sailor, Pilot, Music Composer and Writer to name just a few. Ed’s history with Plant City is just as varied. Ed was in the citrus harvesting business for 10 years, in the cemetary/funeral home business for 2 years, in the new auto sales business for 10 years, in the restaurant business for 3 years, in the country & western “honky-tonk” concert venue for 12 years and with the Plant City Observer for 5 years. Overall Ed has been in the property management and development business for over 33 years. Ed’s business, City Properties Company, renovated the historic Lee building in 1998. Keeping its historic features was important…large rooms, high ceilings, wide hallway’s, etc. There are three main phases in the life of a small downtown: 1. When it was all there was…Norman Rockwell type of downtown when there wasn’t anything or anywhere else to go based on lack of easy transportation. 2. Decline…transportation to other places, emerging suburb growth to outside of the city leads to decline when you literally couldn’t “give it away”. 3. Revival…Plant City is now in “Revival”! Changing historic downtown and revival takes time. Many of the perceptions of downtown, parking, security, etc. are wrong and just a perception that we need to overcome. What’s not working in Plant City downtown is the extreme high end retail…the “snob” appeal is insufficient. High-end residential opportunities are lacking because of insufficient youth entertainment. “Height” is also a problem…with no building’s over 2-3 stories there are no “scenic rooftops”. There is no Lake/Park or College downtown to gather around. What is working in Plant City is the fact that the City Hall and government offices are downtown, the Library is downtown, banks have stayed, the ceiling height restrictions have been raised, there is an increase in the number of residents and the downtown just looks good. Downtown also has the support of the Chamber, City Hall, EDC and Main Street all working well together. The “bad” things about downtown include; no convenience stores or grocery, Social Security office left downtown, Tax Collector office left downtown, Post Office left downtown and the Police Department left downtown. With the midtown development project and the commitment by the community our downtown can continue to grow and be successful. - provided by Mike Arndt

The Board is currently working on updating the by-laws concerning membership. Charles Harris is the new membership chairman. If you would like to have any input, have any ideas about membership or would like to be on the membership committee, talk to Charles Harris.

The Plant City Rotary Installation and Awards banquet will be held on Thursday June 21st at 6 p.m. This year's event will be held at Lone Palm Country Club in Lakeland. Make plans to attend this special event.
