Last Meeting- June 12th

Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Brett Mueller. Brett’s guest speakers were Rhett Rollyson and DJ Brewington with Plant City Little League. The history of Plant City Little League began in 1953 when former Pittsburg Pirate & Plant City resident Truett "Rip" Sewell along with other concerned citizens drafted a formal request that established Plant City to obtain only the 2nd Little League Charter granted in the state of Florida for the start of the 1954 season. Sewell, an All-Star hurler who invented the blooper pitch, passed away in 1989, but his dream of having Little League baseball in Plant City lives on still today. Adelson Field was the original home of the early PCLL years and was also home to the Minor League Miami Marlins spring training in 1956. The field was named after Sam Adelson for his recruiting efforts of many big league teams like the 1925 Indy Indians to have their spring training here in Plant City. Even though days of spring games at Adelson Field is now long gone... the location currently plays host to the FL Strawberry Festival's midway ground festivities each year. Plant City Little League also added 4 more teams in 1956: 1. Breyer Cubs, 2. Horsey Chiefs, 3. Kilgore Giants, 4. Southland Tigers, 5. Civitan, 6. Kiwanis, 7. Optomist, 8. Rotary. The Breyer Cubs were the first league Champions in 1954, led by our own Rotarian, Charlie White as the Bat Boy! The PCLL 9/10 year olds have won back to back state championships. The PCLL is known for its good players and good kids making them great representatives of Plant City. The Eleven year old team recently returned from Cooperstown national tournament were they placed 37^th out of 100 teams in the nation. Very impressive! PCLL has great facilities and a great relationship with the City but could use some improvements and upgrades. A goal is to have covered bleachers (to protect fans from foul balls and the sun!) and batting cages. Financial assistance is also greatly appreciated as the league never turns down a player that wants to play. PCLL is currently contacting potential sponsors for the 2017 Little League season. Contributions will help more than 700 children have an enjoyable Little League experience. In 2016, PCLL once again proved successful as they fielded approximately 60 teams in baseball and softball. As you can imagine, community support is vital to our organization. This Spring, we will continue to use the sponsor names as the team names. This will give a great deal more exposure to the participating sponsors. If you have any questions, please contact D.J. Brewington at (813) 478-3148, or any board member. Rotary International Board adopts new zone structure
At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians.
