Last Meeting - Aug. 17th

Our last program was presented by Brett Mueller. Brett read the “Minutarian” as we did not have a speaker.

This week, we welcome 5 Rotary Youth Exchange students into our district! Please welcome Jimmy from Taiwan; Carol from Germany; Gabi from Brazil; Ella from Finland; and Laura from Italy! We are truly thrilled to have them here and wish them well as they pack a lifetime into one year. Thanks also go out to the host clubs and host families of these five visiting students. Without your commitment and dedication, this could not happen. By the way, we are always looking for more volunteers with Rotary Youth Exchange. If you would like to learn more, let me know.

Congratulations to Nick Hall on completing his coast-to-coast solo bicycle ride to raise money for Polio Eradication. On July 14, Nick dipped his rear wheel into the Pacific Ocean and began his journey which he completed this past Saturday, August 15 as he dipped his front wheel into the Atlantic Ocean! Many Rotarians from three different Rotary Districts were at the beach to welcome Nick and witness this accomplishment. While Nick’s ride has ended, your opportunity to contribute to the cause has not. Nick will continue raising funds and you may still contribute to Pedal Power to End Polio! Help us raise the money to end this disease once and for all.

There will be a “Ride-In Celebration for Nick Hall” on Friday, August 28, 6:00pm at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre in Tampa. Rotarians Andy Brouillard and Peter Gambacorta are hosting this casual finger-food and beverage celebration so that everyone can welcome Nick home. Please register on the District and Club Database so we can plan for the food. All Rotarians and guests (and any potential donors) are welcome!

Community Outreach Project

We will be adopting a community project through “Care Fest”. Care Fest locates homeowners that need help with their property…pressure wash, yard work, paint, etc. More information to follow for this community outreach project.

Put September 26 on your calendar for the “Care Fest” project. We will be working on fixing up and painting a house for an elderly Plant City resident. More details to follow.

New board meeting time

Board meetings will now be held the 3^rd Thursday of each month at Florida Insurance Company at 5:30. Any member is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Club Donations

Recently the Rotary board of directors made the following donation decisions:

Rotary Camp Florida - $3,500 for concrete work

$300 donation to purchase back to school supplies for kids K-12

$1,000 to “Pedal Power” which will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill Gates Foundation for a contribution of $3000.00 to Polio Plus.

The Board also voted to elect a new catering company starting in September. “Catering by the Family” will now be catering our meals. We should see some different meal options moving forward.

Nigeria sees no wild polio cases for one year
Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. Illiteracy traps adults, and their families, in poverty
Around the world, millions of adults are unable to read or write, and therefore struggle to earn a living for themselves and their families. Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy.
