Last Week's Meeting- April 11th

Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian James Boyd. James’ guest speaker was Saleh Rashid, Walgreens Pharmacy Manager who spoke to us about prescription drug abuse. The nonmedical use and abuse of prescription drugs is a serious public health problem in this country. Although most people take prescription medications responsibly, an estimated 52 million people (20 percent of those aged 12 and older) have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons at least once in their lifetimes. Young people are strongly represented in this group. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA) Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey found that about 1 in 12 high school seniors reported past-year nonmedical use of the prescription pain reliever Vicodin in 2010, and 1 in 20 reported abusing OxyContin—making these medications among the most commonly abused drugs by adolescents. There are 5 different “schedules” of prescription drugs; Schedule 1 include marijuana…drugs that have no medical use, Schedule 2 are drugs that have high abuse potential and an approved medical use such as OxyContin and Morphine, Schedule 3 have a lower abuse potential like anabolic steroids, Schedule 4 have an even lower abuse potential and include Xanax, Schedule 5 have the lowest abuse potential and have the highest medical value. These schedules are determined by the FDA and DEA and can be changed or updated at any time. Methadone is the most commonly used pain killer and is now more of a concern than heroin. The “Prescription Drug Monitoring Program” (PDMP) is used to help “track” trends, doctors, etc. that are contributing to the problem. All pharmacies now work together through a database to help curb the growth of prescription drug abuse. 42 of 50 states now have a functional PDMP. Seventy eight people die every day from Opioid overdoses. There were 249 million prescriptions for pain killers written in 2013…enough for every American to have a bottle. American’s consume 80% of the Opioid’s in the world and 99% of HydroCodone is consumed in the US. PDMP has reduced “doctor shopping”…doctors can no longer give out Oxi at their offices which has resulted in a 50% decrease in overdoses. The best way to combat this problem is through education and to select the right drug for the right patient.

Get live updates and vote totals from the Council on Legislation on Rotary.org beginning on 11 April. Representatives from Rotary clubs worldwide will gather in Chicago 10-15 April to consider changes to the policies that guide Rotary International and its member clubs. Many of this year’s proposed changes are designed to increase membership by giving clubs greater flexibility in the timing and the nature of their meetings. UNESCO-IHE scholarship applications now available
The Rotary Foundation and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education are offering up to 10 scholarships for graduate study at UNESCO-IHE's Delft campus in the Netherlands. The aim is to increase the number of trained professionals who can devise, plan, and implement water and sanitation solutions in developing areas. The scholarships also are designed to promote long-term relationships between Rotary members and skilled water and sanitation professionals. Ensure recognition for your Interact clubs
Interact clubs are making a positive difference in schools and communities around the world. Leaders of sponsor Rotary clubs and districts should make sure their Interact clubs get the recognition they deserve by verifying that they qualify for a Presidential Citation. Beware of new email scam claiming to be from Foundation Chair Klinginsmith
A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.
