Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Bill Wicker. Bill’s guest speaker was Nick Hall…Pedal Power to End Polio. Nick’s mission was to raise money and call attention to Rotary’s efforts to rid the world of Polio. On July 14 of this year, Hall dipped his back tire into the Pacific Ocean at Oceanside, Calif., near San Diego and began his nearly 2,500-mile trip across the country before dipping his front tire in the Atlantic Ocean at Vilano Beach in St. Augustine, on Aug. 15 in front of family, friends and fellow Rotary members. 67-year-old Nick Hall is a microbiology professor at the University of South Florida, longtime Temple Terrace Rotary Club member and chair of the club's End Polio Now campaign. He had done a ride like this before — when he was much younger. In 1965, he biked from South Dakota to Chicopee, Mass. In 1967, he biked from South Dakota all the way to Mexico and down the Baja Peninsula. He found the same model bicycle on eBay that he used to ride in the 1960s, 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of his very first cross country trip, and Hall turned 67 this year paralleling his 1967 trek through Baja. The End Polio Now campaign and Rotary International are trying to raise $100,000 to mount a final push to eliminate polio from the planet. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed to give $2 for each $1 raised, and the effort is well underway. Nick related many stories of his trip and the adventures and people he met along the way. From dust storms in Texas, scorching pavement temperatures and being mistaken for a homeless person more than once, the trip was very successful. A great success for Nick, for Rotary, for Polio and for the world. Vaccines cost as little as 60 cents. A dollar donation with matching Gates Foundation money buys five vaccines. Beware of new email scam claiming to be from Foundation Chair Klinginsmith
A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.

Michele Berg named deputy general secretary
