This Week's Meeting- Feb. 1st

Last Meeting- Jan. 25th

Last week’s program was presented by Rotarian Michael Watkins. Michael’s guest speaker was Jake Austin, President and CEO of Plant City Economic Development Corporation. The PCEDC is a group of local professionals who work together to ensure that business leaders around the country understand the benefits of making Plant City the base of their operations, and business leaders in Plant City have every tool at their disposal to launch and expand their businesses. After six years as a staff sergeant for the United States Air Force, Austin attended Western Kentucky University. With experience working for both the State of Kentucky and the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, he moved to Florida to continue his career in economic development. He joined the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. in 2012 as a project manager and, in 2014, was promoted to the director of business retention and expansion. The PCEDC first explored the need in June of 2015. In September the bylaws and mission statement was approved and in October the PCEDC was officially formed with the first meeting in November of 2015. The PCEDC secured office space in downtown Plant City on Reynolds. There are currently 32 voting members with funding of over $300,000. Many projects have started already resulting in 261 jobs and there are currently 20+ leads with 2 or 3 being “serious” deals. The PCEDC has an approved budget of $395,000. The priorities for 2016 include; building a strong foundation through proper hiring and private membership, Investor engagement, partnering with investors, and a focus on the basics by building and maintaining relationships essential for lead generation. The PCEDC will be successful in economic development and community development if we all work together. Employment + Growth + Development = Prosperity!

Friday evening January 29th, our club held a social at the home of Rotarian Bob Roderick . Those in attendance enjoyed an evening of good food and Rotary friendship. If you weren't there you missed out on a good event. Thanks Bod and Doris for your hospitality.

Rotary Valentine's Meeting

Monday Feb. 8th is Bring Your Spouse (or significant other) to Rotary In celebration the upcoming Valentine's Day. Nick Hall is scheduled to be our speaker and will will be giving a presentation about his cross county bicycle trip raising money for Polio Plus. Nick is an interesting individual and it should be an entertaining program. Who know's there may some other surprises that day too!

Michele Berg named deputy general secretary
