Last Week's Meeting - Oct. 26th

Our last program was provided by Rotarian Keith Smith. Keith’s guest speaker was Rotarian Randy Larson. Randy spoke to us about the newly formed Plant City Economic Corporation. Randy is a former Plant City Commissioner (3 terms) and former Plant City Mayor. In cooperation with the City Commission, City Manager Mike Herr, the Tampa Economic Development Council, the Plant City Chamber of Commerce and Economic business leaders in the community it was determined that our city needs to focus on economic growth. The Plant City Economic Corporation fits that need. The past recession impeded growth in and around Plant City and construction stalled. Plant City was slow to react to the resurgence of development around the city. In 2014, 688 jobs were added to the area and more activity. The hiring of the new City Manager, Mike Herr, with his strong leadership and focus on growth and redevelopment, along with the City Commission have renewed the intention of profitable development. Plant City has an inventory of assets that is very attractive to development: lower development costs, labor pool of over 520,000, A+ schools, a Community College, top health care, and over 3000 acres of “entitled land” ready to be developed. The “Plant City Right Now” campaign for economic development was met with great response beyond expectations. Plant City has six main development opportunities around 6 corridors – Lakeside station, Park Road, State Road 39, County Line Road, I-4 and the Airport industrial park. Residential growth, north of I-4, is ready to begin with 3500 homes. The Plant City Economic Corporation will help capitalize on the growth potential to ensure profitable economic growth in our community.

Rotary honors six women for leadership and humanitarian service
Rotary President K.R. Ravindran has named six Rotary Global Women of Action for 2015. Bringing education to rural Mexican area, one school at a time
When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Nigeria sees no wild polio cases for one year
Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
